No charges will be filed in a vehicle accident that left one woman dead on Wheeling Island last December.

On Dec. 28, Susie J. Tamburin, 52, of Wheeling died after being struck by a vehicle on the Island. Wheeling police responded to Lane 42, an alleyway, near South Broadway Street at about 9 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a motorist.

Officers found Tamburin on the ground. She was transported to Wheeling Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m.

Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said Monday it has been determined the woman's death was an accident, and no charges will be filed against the driver. After investigating, police detectives determined Tamburin already was lying on the ground when she was struck.

"We've essentially closed the case," Schwertfeger said. "It was an unfortunate accident. ... The vehicle struck her when it made the turn. It would have been difficult to see Ms. Tamburin."

Schwertfeger said it would two-to-three months before Tamburin's toxicology reports would be available from the state crime laboratory.
