William Mowry

MOWRY, William Foltz, 95, died at Wheeling Medical Park, Sunday, January 26, 2014.

Mr. Mowry leaves behind his beloved wife of 73 years, Jean Black Mowry and daughter Judith Mowry Minder, grandchildren, Michael Minder (Kirsten) and Lisa Minder (Liu Yang) and great-grandchildren, Amelia Minder, Gavin Minder, William Liu, and Caleb Hoffer.

Bill was born in Trafford, Pa., Oct 3, 1918, the son of Oliver W. Mowry and Gertrude C. Yarlett. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Laura, Oliver, Jr., and Ethel and his son-in-law, Jim Minder.

Jeannette, Pa., was his hometown, graduating from Jeannette High School in 1936. He worked for Potter McCune wholesale grocers before and after he served in the US Army in WWII in the European Theatre receiving a bronze star for his service. He studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and took flying lessons using his GI Bill. He came to Wheeling in 1950 to manage Potter McCune. Later he was the owner/manager of the Radio Shack in Benwood, W.Va. until his retirement.

An avid reader and golfer, he loved to travel. He and his wife make annual trips to visit relatives around the U.S. Trips were also made to Alaska and to the Caribbean. He was known for his love of jokes and was happiest making others chuckle and laugh. The family members all have "treasures" of gold coins from him when we all played the "which is which" game before leaving after visits.

A memorial service will be held for Bill at Christ United Methodist Church, 1232 National Road, Wheeling, on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Judith Fisher will preside. Arrangements have been made by Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road.

Memorial contributions may be made in William Mowry's name to the Wheeling Branch of the Salvation Army.
