Carolyn Dalzell

DALZELL, Carolyn Ginter, 70, of Moundsville, WV, died January 9, 2014, at Liza's Place, Wheeling, WV, after a brief struggle with cancer.

She was born December 4, 1943, in New York City to the late John and Margaret Ginter.

She earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Allegheny College and a master's degree in counseling from the University of Albany.

She had a long and fruitful career at Wheeling Jesuit University, beginning in 1973, where her accomplishments included starting and supporting the Counseling Center, serving for many years as moderator for the Students in Union, and helping to develop the EXCEL program. She retired as associate dean of students in 2003, but continued teaching in the Bachelor of Organizational Leadership and Development and First-Year Experience programs through 2013.

In 2010, she received WJU's Francis Xavier Award, the highest award given to a community member for leadership and service.

Carolyn was a passionate volunteer and leader in numerous community organizations and actively served in her church. She worked with people with disabilities through the Something Special Group at Simpson United Methodist Church, a group she founded in 1975, and the Marshall County Special Olympics program. At the state level, she served as a member of the Girl Scouts' Board of Trustees and on the Board of Directors of Appalachian Outreach. Locally, her activities included serving as the service unit director for Marshall County Girl Scouts, on the first Advisory Council of CASA, and as a member of the Strand Theatre Preservation Society Arts Council, the Oglebay Institute's Mansion Museum committee and the Moundsville Woman's Club. In 2011, she was honored for her outstanding contributions to the community with a Tribute to Women Achievement Award from the YWCA Wheeling.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, David Dalzell, Jr., her son, William (Susan) Dalzell of Dayton, OH, and daughter, Elizabeth (John) Selvey of New York City, and three grandchildren, Liam Dalzell and Alice and Baxter Selvey.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jay Ginter, and her parents.

Family will receive friends on Friday, January 24, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home and Crematory, 400 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 25, at 11 a.m. at Simpson United Methodist Church, 800 7th St., Moundsville, with the Rev. Dr. Randall Flanagan officiating.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery, Moundsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Simpson United Methodist Church.
