DULUTH, Ga. - Mike Condon played two solid games in Greenville, but saved his best game for Monday afternoon, as the Wheeling Nailers beat the Gwinnett Gladiators, 2-0, at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Condon made 31 saves, earning his second shutout of the season, while Cody Sylvester lit the lamp twice, in the Nailers' victory.
After a scoreless first period, the Nailers drew first blood at the 13:17 mark of the middle frame. While playing shorthanded, Sylvester forced a turnover at the Gwinnett offensive blueline, sending himself on a breakaway. Sylvester stickhandled, before taking a forehand shot, which rolled up Brad Phillips' left side and into the top of the net.
Wheeling put up a season-high 21 shots on goal during the second period, gaining a 29-24 lead in that category, after the Gladiators had a 15-8 advantage in the first.
The Nailers maintained their one-goal lead all the way until the final minute of the third period, when they added an insurance score.
Jack MacLellan tapped a pass to Sylvester, who nailed the center of the net from the middle of the center circle.
Brad Phillips suffered the loss, making 35 saves on 36 shots.
The Nailers will continue their six-game road trip in Toledo at 7:15 on Friday night against the Walleye. Wheeling's next home game takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
