The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

SIGAL, Hannah B. Mervis, 92, of Wheeling, WV, died on Wednesday, December 25, 2013, in Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital and Geriatric Center, Wheeling, WV.

She was born March 11, 1921, in Kittanning, PA, the daughter of the late Rose and Phillip Mervis.

Hannah was a member of Temple Shalom in Wheeling, WV. She loved to read as you could always find her in the middle of a book or two. She loved opera and classical music. Her favorite color was blue, which she loved wearing.

Her smile is what her family, her visitors and everyone at Peterson will remember about her. That smile brought more smiles to many faces. Family photos were her most cherished possessions, and they lined the walls of her room.

In her early years, she was a Girl Scout troop leader; she was a proof- reader at the Leader-Times in Kittanning, PA., and she attended Pittsburgh Business College. After being a stay-at-home mom, she enjoyed many years as a saleswoman at Horne's department store in downtown Wheeling. She was a member of Temple Shalom Sisterhood and the Wheeling-Belmont Chapter of Hadassah.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Ben, Ruben, Izzy, Sam, Esther, Molly, Sally and Ann.

She is survived by a son, Ron Sigal of Kingston, N.Y., her daughter, Phyllis Sigal and her husband, Bruce Wheeler, (who Hannah considered her second son) of Wheeling, WV. And she especially loved her grandchildren. Nothing lit up her face like a surprise visit from grandson, Leland Alexander Wheeler of Los Angeles, CA., and granddaughter, Amanda Seidler and her husband, Chris of Sewickley, PA. She is also survived by a sister, Edye Richardson. Special people in Hannah's life were Marie Assaro, her loving caretaker and friend for many years, and Ireta Tebay, her "best friend for 50 years."

Friends will be received on Saturday, December 28, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. and on Sunday, December 29, 2013, from noon until time of service at 1 p.m. at the Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling, W.Va. (304-232-2732) with Rabbi Beth Jacowitz- Chottiner officiating. Interment in Jewish Memorial Gardens, Triadelphia, WV.

Hannah's family would like to thank everyone at Peterson, the nurses, activities personnel, therapists and her aides, Carol, Laura, Virginia, Erin and especially Ruth, who held her hand to the end.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St, Wheeling, WV 26003 or to the Wheeling Symphony, 1025 Main St, Suite 811, Wheeling, WV 26003 (wheeling
