By JOSELYN KING Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

The Ohio County Board of Education on Monday voted to suspend a Wheeling Park High School teacher for three days without pay.

The board voted to suspend Bridget Weir, a yearbook, publications and language arts teacher. Superintendent Dianna Vargo said she would not provide additional details regarding the personnel matter.

Weir will be suspended without pay for three consecutive instructional days when students are present, and her suspension is to begin today.

In other matters, board members approved the retirements effective June 30, 2014, for six employees whose experience in Ohio County Schools total a collective 224 years.

In other matters, MaryLu Hutchins, student services director for Ohio County Schools, spoke before the board regarding the district's universal pre-kindergarten program.

Although students are required to participate in the schooling, about 300 students in the four year range are enrolled this year - an increase of 25 students over last year's enrollment, she said.

Human resources director Ann Gaudino told board members a new web-based job application system for Ohio County Schools will be up and running at the beginning of 2014. Interested candidates will enter their personal information just one time into the system, and be able to use that same information without re-entering it each time they apply for a position with the school district.

The contract with Aspex Solutions will cost the school district $2,100 annually.

A delegation from the Ohio County Education Association urged the Ohio Board of Education to pass a resolution showing their support for the West Virginia Education Association's efforts seeking wages for state teachers that are more competitive with those in neighboring states.
