The Marshall County Airport is getting a share of more than $20 million in state and federal grants baing distributed to 18 facilities in West Virginia.

John Richmond, newly appointed president of the Marshall County Airport Authority, said his agency's share of $124,368 will pay for completion of the new T-Hangar at the airport.

"This grant will pay for cost overrun from the original estimated cost of $450,000," he said. "We normally get $150,000 each year. We banked that allocation until we had enough to build the new hangar."

The nested T-Hangar design provides 16 spaces for planes to be positioned with their tails toward the center of the building on two different sides. Richmond said the new hangar can accommodate plans with longer wing spans.

Yeager Airport in Charleston received the highest allocation of funds with more than $8.1 million to remove obstructions and $222,000 for a sustainable management plan.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox jointly announced the funding.
