Thomas Tighe

TIGHE, Thomas James, 81, of Wheeling passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012.

He was born May 15, 1931, in Wheeling, son of the late William and Elizabeth Sichi Tighe.

Thomas was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Opals, Short-Circuit, and the American Legion. He was the superintendent of safety, plant protection and training for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel and taught a safe driving class for 16 years. He was the first in the state to receive an emeritus award for his driving class. Thomas was past president of AARP Wheeling Chapter, past vice president of Mending Hearts, past president of West Liberty Alumni, past president of Elm Grove Baseball, and regional director for Pony baseball. He was a 1949 graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School and was in charge of their reunions for many years. Thomas was a veteran of the US Army.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Alice Tighe; four children, Kathleen Tighe of Tampa, FL, Thomas Edward Tighe of Wheeling, James Bernard Tighe and his wife, Patty of Wheeling, and Carol Tighe Richards and her husband, Nelson of Chesterfield, VA; five grandchildren, Anthony, Michael and Laura Tighe of Wheeling, and Corey and Nathan Richards of Chesterfield, VA; and a brother, William A. Tighe and his wife, Diana of St. Clairsville, OH.

Friends will be received Sunday, December 23, 2012, from noon to 3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St., Elm Grove, Wheeling (304-242-2311), where services will be held Monday, December 24, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. with Father John Mulcahy serving as celebrant. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
