Expand Wheeling City Hiring Pool

October 5, 2012
The Intelligencer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Telling a qualified, eager job applicant he cannot work for the city of Wheeling because he does not live in Ohio County makes no sense, yet that is the existing rule.

Having city employees who live in or near Wheeling is reasonable from a purely practical standpoint. But as the law stands, someone from the far eastern area of Ohio County can be hired, while an applicant from nearby Benwood has to be rejected.

City officials want the rule changed, to allow hiring from southern Brooke County and northern Marshall County. That would provide more qualified applicants for city jobs.

City Council's Rules Committee recommended the change this week, but only by a 2-1 vote.

We don't understand the controversy. The change is a common-sense one - and the full council should approve it at their Oct. 16 meeting.
