WHEELING - Local residents will be able to hear from West Virginia's three U.S. Senate candidates on Oct. 10 when they debate in Wheeling.

The candidates are incumbent U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat; Republican challenger John Raese of Morgantown; and Mountain Party candidate Bob Henry Baber. The debate is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will take place at West Virginia Northern Community College's B&O Auditorium located at 1704 Market St. in downtown Wheeling.

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register are co-sponsoring the 90-minute debate with West Virginia Northern. It is open to the public.

J. Michael Myer, executive editor of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, will moderate the event.

"The candidates who have accepted our invitation to the U.S. Senate debate are to be commended," Myer said. "Not all candidates for office this year have been willing to face their opponents in an issues-oriented forum such as we will be holding."

Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 6, to choose the state's next U.S. senator during the 2012 general election. Manchin has held the post since being elected in 2010 following the death of longtime Sen. Robert C. Byrd.
