CDBG Funds Going To Home Repair Program
By IAN HICKS Staff WriterChange Inc. is now accepting applications from Weirton residents for assistance under its Emergency Home Repair program.
That program, funded with $66,000 of the city's Community Development Block Grant funding for the current fiscal year, allows low- to moderate-income homeowners to apply for money to complete emergency repairs through the community action group, which serves residents of the Northern Panhandle and surrounding areas in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Judy Raveaux, chief executive officer of Change Inc., said $40,000 has been set aside for home repair, with an additional $20,000 for repairs to sidewalks and retaining walls.
The remaining $6,000 will cover administrative costs, she noted.
Weirton Mayor Mark Harris said he's pleased the program is getting off the ground as the city continues to spruce up its appearance through various community initiatives.
"We realize there's a need for it," he said. "There's people that can't afford to fix these projects."
Councilman George Ash said he originally proposed the program for residents of his Ward 4, but he and other city leaders decided to make it a city-wide effort.
"It's absolutely needed," said Ash, noting many homes and sidewalks throughout the city have fallen into disrepair, particularly in low-income areas. "You can drive down any street in the city you want, you'll find it."
Income-eligibility is based on family size, according to Michael Adams, housing and facilities manager for Change Inc. Raveaux said the program is only open to Weirton residents who both own and live in their homes - rental properties do not qualify.
Raveaux said she encourages anyone who thinks they might be eligible to apply. For more information, residents can call the organization's office at 304-797-7733.
