Representing Constituents
The IntelligencerAs the Senate debates a national health care takeover that President Barack Obama and other liberals are determined to pass, some analysts have noted the supposedly fragmented nature of opposition. Clearly, that is in an effort to minimize the impact of disagreement about the plan.
One recent analysis pointed to members of Congress from Ohio. It was noted that U.S. Rep. Charles Wilson, the Democrat who represents an area of East Ohio, opposes public funding of abortions. Another representative is concerned about the bill's cost. Still others don't want the bill to include "the public option."
But what such analyses miss is that many of the liberals arguing in favor of the bill have narrow, special interests, too. For example, some seem to care little about the overall bill, as long as it includes public funding for abortions. Others insist that a public option is needed, regardless of what else is in the bill.
In other words, there is some fragmentation on both sides of the controversy. The difference is that the liberal wing of the Democratic Party seems to be doing a better job of using party discipline to keep votes in line.
Lawmakers, both Democratic and Republican, should view their constituents' wishes as the most important special interest in regard to the bill.
Concern about cost is not just a conservative viewpoint. Many Americans share it. Opposition to public funding of abortions is widespread. So is dislike of the idea that illegal immigrants would get free or reduced-price health care under the bill. And millions of Americans who like the health insurance policies they have now do not want to be forced by government to change or pay more for them.
Lawmakers such as Wilson should not allow themselves to be swayed by assurances that somehow, they have been marginalized because of their concerns. They are merely reflecting the will of the people who sent them to Washington.

'Steelmaker;... If you remember, Barry Hussein (Soetoro)'s right hand man, Rahm Emmanuel stated that one should "Never let a good crisis go to waste". Only the Ignorant do NOT see that happening here with ObieCare2009, and "Cap&Tax", AND the "Stimulus" and the buy-outs, bail-outs and take-overs! The "Hopey, Changey" KOOL-ADE must be pretty strong stuff!....don't you think?

BTW, since you guys keep chanting that Obie does not want to cover illegals... The number of uninsured put out is over 40 million. Unless you include illegals, according to the Census Bureau's numbers it CAN'T be that high. Explain that.

Lorenzo, I haven't noticed piles of bleeding and rotting bodies littering the streets, or doctors declaring bankruptcy. I guess the insurance industry must be paying at least a few of the claims. Isn't it sinking in yet? This is a manufactured crisis. To dumb it down to your level, THERE IS NO CRISIS. My sister runs one of the largest hospitals in the Southwest. It is the primary trauma center for her part of that state. The folks she hates to deal with are the government agencies, not the insurance companies. They underpay everything, question stupid stuff and take forever to cough up the money. The insurance companies aren't saints, but in general pay more and faster for the same treatments, and argue less. First hand data, untouched by the mainstream media. So where is the crisis?

Budman,...I think the Liberals call it the " Get out of the way and die' plan ! Just look at the proposed medical spending of ObamaCare2009. The presentations I saw , show a sharp decrease in spending as the people got older. After around age 55 the amount of money alloted for health care drops drastically. The resources will be spent on the young,...not the old. And by the way, LIBBIES, ALL of US will get old, sooner or later. Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it!

$ 500 billion will be cut from Medicare, a program that is hanging on by a thread now, to help pay for illegals free health. Don't tell me that there will not be rationing of health care and death panels! Someone will pay and it will be the Seniors. Some compassion!

So the insurance "industry" should just remain out-of-control so ALL of us will suffer as the "industry' is sanctioned to change policies at will, to gouge/purge customers at will and to raise prices at will -- Forever. They buy whatever they want in the way of multi-media ads, lawmakers and, just maybe, editorialists and their bosses. It is NOT an abortion bill and this editorial is a propaganda dirt bomb.

What does she do at Kroger’s when they ask her “Paper or Plastic”? Start a search on her I-Phoney?”

That's wonderful Nancy. Now what does that have to do with cutting %500 BILLION from Medicare and cutting "FRAUD" by $500 BILLION? Does it really require the Govt., controlling Health Care in the USA, to cut FRAUD out of a GOVT PAID PROGRAM??????? Explain plesase why THAT is necessary.

Here is your typical sham, by your typical Limbaaa Party of NO: "On Thursday, thinking Democratic senators would balk at the idea, Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) introduced the gimmick health-care amendment. "The idea, broad-brush, is that whatever government option is in the bill, every senator and every representative should be enrolled in it," Vitter told The Hill. "No other possibilities, no other choices." "It's called leadership," Coburn said. "If it's good enough for everybody else, we ought to be leading by example." But Democrats called their bluff, and the Republicans wouldn't allow it. When Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) tried to become a co-sponsor of the amendment, he got the cold shoulder. So Brown, joined by Sens. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), and Al Franken (D-Minn.), forced his way onto the amendment with a unanimous consent vote."

Ellis,....have you noticed yet that NO LIBERAL wants to address, nor can they address, the notion of the $500 Billion Medicare Fraud. Apparently the current administration can only "cut medicare fraud" if Obamacare2009 becomes law. Otherwise the current administration will keep paying the %500 BILLION each year in Medicare fraud. It can ONLY be stopped by ObamaCare2009. The current administration KNOWS fraud is there, but will only "CUT" medicare fraud if the current administration is allowed to control health care in the USA. What crap that is !!! HOPE AND CHANGE..........................W O W ! I sure hope it changes!

I met a guy from Nigeria. He complained that he had to pay for his own health insurance, instead of getting it for free like in Europe. I asked him if he paid more income tax here or there. He said it was significantly less here, but what did that have to do with it? I asked if he got better care here or there. He said he often had to wait months to see a doctor there. I asked if he got to pick his doctor there. He said no. So I said so in Europe you paid higher taxes, didn't get to pick your doctor, and could wait months to see him? THAT'S why you pay for your own insurance, to get better care. He thought about it, and agreed with me.

"Truth", I think the idea that Obie has lied about all sorts of things so far might be why no one takes that at face value. There;s also the point that several clauses regarding who is elegible are really vaguely written, and the right judge with the right case could easily decide they can be covered. The bills offered by this leadership have been models of obfuscation. They are deliberately written to be almost impossible to decipher, and then offered up with almost no time for reading. What happened to the "transparency pledge"? What happened to the time each bill was going to be posted on the Net before a vote? If this bill will reduce fraud and waste, why not do that first, to prove I'm wrong? To all that claim no claims get paid, who is paying, since SOMEONE is? Medicare pays less than insurance, so it's not them.

Shark88, FactCheck dot org determined that Obama quote to be false. Even Obama isn’t that dense. However, FactCheck points out that Obama DID float the idea of “billing veterans’ private insurance companies for treatment of conditions connected to their military service, including war injuries.” Obama administration officials insisted “that their proposal would have no financial impact on veterans at all. But the American Legion strongly protested because “a veteran’s treatment might cost enough to reach maximum insurance coverage limits, leaving the rest of the veteran’s family without health care benefits.” Two days later the Obama administration dropped the idea. It’s a good thing veterans organizations are keeping a close eye on this administration.

Obama's response after backing off a Military Private Insurance Proposal: "Look, it's an all volunteer force," Obama complained."Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It doesn't compute.." "I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country," Obama continued. "I wasn't asking for blood, just money. With this country facing the worst financial crisis in its history, I'd have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to try to help reduce the nation's deficit. I guess I underestimated the selfishness of some of my fellow Americans."
