JMHS Practices New Evacuation Plans
By ART LIMANN Staff WriterStudents at John Marshall High School left their school in orderly fashion Tuesday to practice new evacuation plans developed to keep them safe.
Principal Corey Murphy, following the drill, said, "I think it went went well. I haven't seen any problems."
He said, following the recent bomb threat at the school, it was realized some things, "needed to improve." Murphy mentioned communications specifically and said that has been addressed.
He also said it was determined the evacuation plan needed to be revised to get students away from busy W.Va. 2.
"We have written up new plans," Murphy said. "We had people on the front grass. We have changed a few things so we're exiting in the most efficient way and keeping kids safe."
With representatives of the West Virginia State Police, Marshall County Sheriff's Department, Marshall County Emergency Management Office, and Glen Dale Police observing, students filed filed from the school shortly after 10 a.m.
Sgt. Tom Wood of the West Virginia State Police said, "I think it was very orderly. There were a couple of bugs we need to work out where students staged, but this can be addressed. All in all it's a much better place to be. It's a better plan than what we had."
