ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Belmont County voters apparently chose carefully Tuesday when deciding the fate of levies in their communities, and many important ones were voted down.

Among issues defeated were a levy to benefit social service programs in the county and another from the city of Bellaire that would have been used to fund police department there.

In Shadyside Local School District, where teachers recently served a strike notice, voters struck down the renewal of a 5.4-mill school levy. There were 896 residents there who voted for the levy, while 1,124 said "no."

Also in Shadyside, voters opted to renew a 4-mill current expenses levy to benefit the village with a vote of 763 in favor and 662 against.

The additional 5-mill levy in Bellaire for operation of the police department received 369 votes, while 428 ballots were cast against it.

The county levy to benefits social service programs would have been for 1 mill for a period of 10 years. Voters rejected this by a vote of 9,725 to 8,344.

Also defeated was the replacement of a 4-mill levy in the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District, which lost by a vote of 773 in favor to 859 against.

Among levies passing Tuesday was an additional 5-mill fire levy in the village of Flushing. There were 157 voters who approved of the levy and 80 who said "no."

A levy to benefit St. Clairsville police also was victorious and passed 1,133 to 589.

In Pease Township, voters overwhelmingly passed the renewal of a 0.5-mill levy for fire protection. They voted 750 in favor and 302 against.

Voters in both Barnesville and St. Clairsville also agreed their respective communities should opt out of the Natural Gas Aggregation Program.

The vote total in St. Clairsville was 1,183 in favor to 492 opposed. In Barnesville, 593 voted "yes," while 315 checked "no."

Three local options regarding the sale of liquor in Belmont County also passed Tuesday.

Voters in Neffs agreed to allow Sunday sales of liquor at the Quick Stop Barack by a vote of 248-204.

In St. Clairsvillle, voters approved Sunday sales of liquor at Sam's Club by a vote of 207 to 176 and at Wal-Mart by a vote of 206 to 175.

This is the reason for county schools. Gov. Ted said he can't find any waste. What? Why do we have hundreds of townships in 88 counties? Why do we have 620+ school systems in 88 counties? Now we got casnio money we will be fine.

Hooplehead

The Conservative candidate had no charisma, no money and no support. He started very late and he had to fight both political parties. Yet, he won 45% of the vote. Does that tell you anything?

As for New Jersey and Virginia, what happened to Barry Sotero there? He made at least 5 trips to each state in the last month. Corzine outspent Cristy 5-1. Virginia went to Obama last year. Yet, the independent, middle of the road voters came out in droves to reject Barry Sotero's vision of government.

A 20-point win in Virginia? 4 points in blue state Jersey?

MMMMMMM..Democrats = LOSERS!!!!

"Senior Congressional Democrats told ABC News today it is highly unlikely that a health care reform bill will be completed this year, just a week after President Barack Obama declared he was "absolutely confident" he'll be able to sign one by then."

Getting this done by the by the end of the year is a no-go," a senior Democratic leadership aide told ABC News."

The voters must make tough decisions regarding their finances. Is it too much too ask the same thing of government?

The Ohio State Board will eventually come in and take over Shadyside. We see the entire Upper Ohio Valley losing population faster than the local governments re adjusting fiscally. The ageing infrastrure is decaying and there is simply no emergency rainy day funds for these repairs. We saw this evolving over the past 40 years and the politicians just kept putting it off for another group to deal with it. I am curious as to how the local Democratic Parties who had run the valley into the ground, how they will blame the local Republicans. Perhaps, if the Dems could let go of thier graff and corrupt ways.

Yep..gambling and alcohol a "go", people in need denied. Sounds like a set-up for increased crime as people become more and more desperate.

I feel bad that the school levies were defeated. However, it is a good thing that the welfare, er...ummmm...excuse me, the "social service" did not pass......

Gambling - YES. Education - NO.

Is this why the good people of Ohio can't figure out which lane is the slow lane and which is the passing lane?

Or it could be that 45% of the voters in that district were not happy with either of the "major party" candidates.

Did you even wonder why the democrat, after receiving the endorcement of the withdrawing republican candidate, still only received 49% of the votes cast?

Hey, congratulations though, a win is a win.

Ellis, what does the Congressional win in NY mean? Boss and Palin did all in their power plus 95% of the campaign money for the "C" came from elsewhere. Even with the leader Boss Limpballs and his wife Sarah, the C's are losers. mmmmmmm mmmmmmmm mmmmmmm losers

He also said that millions of minorities and college kids were swooning in the aisles, showing up for mass rallies and "chanting childish slogans without thought" that almost made the Sotero rallies seem like the Maoist Revolutionary meetings.

In short, despite everything working in his favor-new voters, economy, war, fresh face, "hope" and "change", anger at Bush, pathetic shoe salesman of a candidate in Tom McCann, mass media fawning, failure to ask difficult questions, questionable overseas fundraising, the Democratic machine, shady associations and a need to punish Republicans, the Great Leader Sotero only managed a 7-point win.

Krauthammer, the intelligent man that he is, absolutely understands the significance of such a small margin, given the above factors.

The rest of liberal America did not.

In New York 23, a conservative guy came out of nowhere and won 45% of the vote, despite starting at the las minute and fighting both the Dems and the

A levy is nothing more than a tax by another name. In this valley, it has been an ongoing revenue source for government. Voters, knowing that they are facing difficult economic times, are not in a mood to hand over perpetual revenue to government entities that have not proven that they can tighten their belts.

BTW, REPUBLICAN VICTORIES in NEW JERSEY AND VIRGINIA! HA HA HA.

These elections were a referandum on Sotero and the Democratic leadership. The results speak for themselves.

Charles Krauthammer, a brilliant man, made a very good point last night. He said that the Sotero people thought they had a mandate for a left-wing shift. They found out last night that they did not. He also said that it was very telling that Sotero only beat Tom McCann by 7 points. America had just hit the skids, economically. Tom McCann was a hack. The people were angry at Bush. Two wars were dragging on. People were losing their jobs and homes. Sotero was fresh and new and charismatic...
