Bringing Back Common Sense
By The IntelligencerThe Christina School Board in Bear, Del., finally has bowed to common sense - but only after protests from the public and national publicity forced it to do so.
Until Tuesday, a 6-year-old student in the district, Zachary Christie, was facing a 45-day suspension from first grade. Christie's offense was that he took a Cub Scout-style eating utensil - one with a folding spoon, fork and knife - to school. He made no secret of it. The lad wanted to show off the device to his friends.
But he ran afoul of the district's "zero tolerance" policy regarding weapons in school - just like the fifth-grade girl who was expelled last year after taking a birthday cake to school. She took along a knife with which to cut the cake.
On Tuesday, school board members let Christie off the hook - but dodged the issue. They simply reduced penalties for kindergarteners and first graders who take weapons to school.
The issue is simple common sense. Should children be allowed to take knives to school? Of course not. But surely intelligent people can devise some policy to protect students without punishing a little boy who simply made a mistake.

Correct , Ellis. "Public Education" falls under the 10th amendment..."All powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, orto the people." THAT means "public education" remains in the realm of STATE control. The Federal Gov't can aid and assist but cannot TAKE CONTROL--legally-- of public education. Half a s s ed control and 'political correctness' by the Feds has led to the "dumbing down" of public education, and many of those that present it.

Zip Head How do you think public schools get their funding? If more and more students leave public schools, do you really believe that their parents are going to stand idly by? Do you think that parents want their children to be indoctrinated? Do you think that parents want to subsidize overpaid, lazy and stupid teachers who work less than the avg. American? Dream on, pal. Public schools are in for major reform. It is just a matter of time. The reality is, public education is illegal at the federal level. The Constitution clearly spells out the limited functions of government. The Founders did not leave a method of funding public education, therefore, it is unconstitutional.

Public schools today encourage kids to have sex, but lock them up for having a cigarette afterwards.

Just another reason to get the government out of the business of education. With all of their political correctness and social engineering, they strain at gnats and swallows camels.
