WHEELING - After driving from Tyler County's Middlebourne, Nancy Kester and her son George were hoping for a little better weather during their time at Oglebayfest Friday.

"We came all the way up here for rain. Hopefully, it will slack off a little," Kester said in observing the precipitation that fell in varying amounts much of the day.

Indeed, the 32nd Annual Oglebayfest got off to a soggy start at Oglebay Park, no doubt prompting some to stay dry at home.

Oglebayfest continues today and Sunday under what is predicted to be dryer conditions. According to the National Weather Service, today's forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a high temperature of 67 degrees. Sunday's forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 61 degrees.

Though Friday was a little wet, Wheeling resident Rebecca Kaniecki brought her 3-year-old twin daughters, Avery and Alana Kaniecki, to enjoy the festivities.

"It would be better if the weather was nicer," Rebecca Kaniecki said, though noting she and her daughters enjoyed the food and crafts despite the rain.

Tammy Clark of Glen Dale said the rain probably took a few customers away from her craft stand.

"Normally, this is a very good place to show off your crafts," she said.

But at another stand, Francee Allen of Mounds-ville said she had a steady stream of customers.

"This is really nice to see an event like this. I like to see the crafts that everyone has," she said.

Wheeling husband and wife Tom and Sue Smith also enjoyed their time.

"I just love being here because I get to see so many people I don't otherwise get to see. And Oglebay Park is just so beautiful," Sue Smith said.

Remaining weekend events for Oglebayfest include:

  • The Ohio County Country Fair is set up at Site One and will be featuring quilt displays, homegrown foods and farm animals today and Sunday. The country fair offers a variety of traditional fair demonstrations and competitions for all ages including quilting demonstrations, 4-H rabbit show and auction, butter making, hog calling, fiddling, rock throwing and baby crawling competitions.

The country fair will host the West Virginia Pony Pull Championship on Sunday afternoon. A Belgian horse display also will be at Site One on both today and Sunday.

  • Inflatable rides will be available near Schenk Lake both today and Sunday afternoon, and weather permitting, an antique car display is scheduled for Sunday on the Mansion lawn.
  • The Boy Scouts En-campment will be at the race track both today and Sunday, and the annual Oglebayfest Golf Scramble at the Crispin Golf Course will have an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.
  • The Cascading Waters Show, a 150-foot fountain choreographed to lights, is presented 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. today at Schenk Lake.
