Huffer’s Story A Warning

WHEELING - The time Patrick Tribett has spent in jail has apparently done nothing to ease his need to get high by huffing spray paint.

Tribett was arrested less than a month ago in McMechen after police found him inhaling paint in an area near Industrial Park known as the Mud Pit. It wasn't the first such incident.

Tribett received national publicity in 2005 after being arrested by the Bellaire Police Department. He was intoxicated while purchasing gold spray paint in a village business and placed under arrest, but it was his mugshot that earned him a certain level of fame. The lower half of his face was covered in gold paint from inhaling the toxins.

Since then, he's been arrested at least four times for the same offense. Gold and silver spray paint covered Tribett's lower face and hands on March 24 of this year when McMechen police found Tribett walking along W.Va. 2. In June 2006, Wheeling police found him intoxicated, again with his face covered in paint, and that arrest was made just one week after he was arrested under the Interstate 470 bridge where he was found huffing paint. Last year, Wheeling police charged him with public intoxication after finding him staggering along Market Street near 15th Street in Wheeling.

According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, inhalant abuse, commonly called "huffing," is the purposeful inhalation of chemical vapors to achieve an altered mental or physical state, which for most abusers is a euphoric effect. Abusers inhale vapors emitted from a wide range of substances. In fact, chemical vapors used as inhalants can be found in more than 1,000 common household products.

Belmont County Drug Court Coordinator Rebecca Schuetz said there is no real research on just how addictive huffing is, but she said, like all addiction, much of it depends on the individual. She said there also is little known about the withdrawal, tolerance and long-term damage caused by inhalants.

However, she said what is known about "huffing" is frightening.

"The most critical acute effect of inhalants is death," Schuetz said. "The substances inhaled are poisons."

Ohio County Prosecutor Scott Smith said Tribett's situation is difficult in terms of law. He said the criminal justice system is not designed to deal with people who have mental illness or addiction problems. He said the justice system is limited in the tools needed to force people into treatment, especially when they are committing "low-level" offenses.

Smith suggested that Tribett may not get the treatment he needs unless he commits a serious crime.

"That is an unfortunate situation many times," Smith said. "It all goes back to basic constitutional rights. You can't deprive someone of their liberty without the basis to do so. It's a very sad situation, and there is no process where a person has to be forced to get help. ... When someone commits a felony and receives jail time, there are more tools to order someone to a facility."

Ohio County Health Department Administrator Howard Gamble agreed with Smith in that it may take a serious crime for Tribett to receive the help he needs. He said, however, that there is a public health issue. He said Tribett is becoming a "public nuisance," and there are public-health nuisance laws. Gamble also said Tribett's arrests are costing the public money.

"The man definitely needs advanced treatment and counseling," Gamble said. "Locking him up is not working."

Tribett has been arrested multiple times in recent years by the McMechen Police Department. McMechen Police Chief David Robinson said the odds of Tribett resisting his arrest are "50-50." The chief said he does not know if he's ever seen Tribett when he was not under the influence of a substance he inhaled.

" I can't say that I have seen him sober," Robinson said. "I've talked to him on his way down, and you have a 50-50 shot of him being agreeable. You just don't know what personality you will see. He has resisted. He could be coming down and be anxious. It's like an alcoholic who is looking for a drink or someone who is looking for drugs. ... This is what he does."

Robinson said, once Tribett is arrested, a magistrate sets his bond or he is released on his own recognizance. He said, in cases that involved the McMechen Police Department, Tribett did show up for his scheduled hearings. Robinson said Tribett also has taken to the option of seeking "treatment."

"To my knowledge, he has never failed to appear for a hearing," Robinson said. "He has turned himself in for treatment, and we have taken him to (the emergency room) on two occasions ... He did seek treatment, and then it is up to him from there."

The problem with you, and your kind, is that you think personal compassion and tax dollars go hand in hand. I feel compassion for this man's family. I feel that I have a right to give of my own money to help others. I do NOT believe that "compassion" is a legal excuse to steal my tax dollars.

If you have compassion for others, give them YOUR money. You have no right to take mine.

I do feel sorry for this man's family but I have nothing but pity and disgust for him. He chose to do this and, by extension, he chose the consequences.

As long as he doesn't hurt others, break the law or steal my tax dollars, let him huff away.

Where are you liberals with regard to privacy rights? What is the difference between a huffer and a Chief of police drunk and falling off a barstool? The chief doesn't get his mugshot in the paper.

Rudy..I wouldn't expect any compassion from this group....that would mean taking the focus off of self.

This guy looks like Tom Brady. He looks annoying.

This man made a choice to engage in a ridiculous activity. As long as he doesn't hurt others, break the law or steal my tax dollars, go to it, I say.

I don't care if you kill yourself, just don't harm others in the process and, oh, by the way, don't steal my tax dollars while you're at it.

Many states now regulate the sale of spray paint for this reason.

To add to the subject: cigarettes manufacturers can be sued for causing death, bars can be sued for causing death, the FDA regulates drugs, and we've made some even illegal. And yet with the exception of regulating age, gambling recieves no attention. Over 21, you can destroy your life with games and slots all you want and no casino ever has to accept responsibility for it. Makes me very sad and trust me, it will get much much worse.

The fact that many of you take sheer delight in this human being's condition in life is, well, next to evil.

"You bring up a good point. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the annoying back up alarm on the motorized cart being driven around the store by a fat slob. You see these people walk to the store and get on the cart. They weigh 400 lbs. They buy Little Debbies and Mountain Dew. I want to grab them and say "If you would just WALK around the store and if you would just stop stuffing junk food down your throat..."

So true. And you know what is the pièce de résistance? These sadly obese people get from their doctors, a handicap sticker. Now they can park just a few feet from the door. Heaven forbid they should have to walk a few extra steps to buy their food/poison.

Ladydiamond, the huffer can spare himself and his family the embarressment by cleaning up, throwing away the paint can and getting a job. Personal choice, it's a wonderful thing. Quit playing the victim care, most of us don't buy it.

Ladydiamond--Not sure about the sourse of the picture, BUT police pictures taken at arrest/booking and police reports are PUBLIC RECORD. Just like YOUR property taxes at the County Building.

As far as I am concerned the publishing of these pictures of Tribett’s face with spray paint, his arrests and detailing his addiction is a breech of confidentiality and a detriment to him seeking help and potential recovery. It shows lack of community support and compassion. How embarrassing for him and his family to see this over and over again as front page news. And why would this newspaper choose to consistently allow this to be front page news. Hopefully Tribett has a good attorney. Then maybe he can afford the good stuff that some of the "higher ups" around here are hooked on You know, the ones that are not making front page news but are still getting plastered out of their minds from drug and alcohol addiction.

Hey Rudy, you lying sack of sh*t, still waiting for you to answer my questions:

1. Do you live in the Valley or not?

2. Where ARE those “thousands of high paying” 6-figure jobs in the Valley you talked about? You can do us all a great public service by naming them in this tough job market.

Director HarveyJayWeiss, Shouldn't this guy be put away in a safe place for good -- for his good and for the public good?

Get him on any charge -- destroying stratospheric ozone to cause global warming, violating limits to cap and trade, wearing white after Labor Day, you name it. Can't the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition do something absolutely firm to help?

IF the NIPC can't help, really help, then they likely are just a government-funded do-nothing-good group like ACORN.

Doesn't this poor soul have family? Can't they have him committed to rehab? Can't a judge commit him to rehab for 6 months to a year? Possibly he needs to be in some type of mental facility permanently!

I am surprised that there is this kind of addiction still going on given the ease of which it is to get other illegal drugs. Yes, he did look funny with the spray paint on his face & I gotta admit, Pickles, that your comment sounded a lot like something either of my "mouth-like-House" kids might have made, but what really disturbed me the most was his face; he looks like he might have had a stroke on his R. side. (Nurse) But unless or until he wants help, nothing can make any difference. Unfortunately 9 outta 10 addicts die drunk/high. God help him!

You bring up a good point. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the annoying back up alarm on the motorized cart being driven around the store by a fat slob. You see these people walk to the store and get on the cart. They weigh 400 lbs. They buy Little Debbies and Mountain Dew. I want to grab them and say "If you would just WALK around the store and if you would just stop stuffing junk food down your throat while watching Oprah from your Rent A Center couch, you wouldn't be fat and you wouldn't need a cart!"

But, of course, what can I really say that will make a difference? I can only add that I don't care how many people kill themselves with drugs, alcohol, smoking or junk food. I just don't think it's fair that I have to pay for it.
