Three-Vehicle Crash Sends One to Hospital
By GABE WELLS Staff WriterVehicles were scattered about both sides of Interstate 70 in Ohio County following Tuesday morning collisions that caused injuries and stalled traffic.
At least three vehicles were involved in a crash at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Two-Mile Hill east of Wheeling near The Highlands. An emergency responder at the scene said he believed the crash occurred in the eastbound lane of I-70, but one of the vehicles involved came to rest in the westbound lane. At least one woman was injured in that crash, and she was taken from the scene by a Wheeling Fire Department emergency squad. According to reports, two other people were hurt as well.
Debris, including a wheel that had been torn from one of the vehicles involved, littered both sides of the highway and the median. Traffic was reduced to one lane in both directions because of the crash, but both lanes were moving as usual by noon.
The Wheeling Detachment of the West Virginia State Police is handling the investigation of the crash. The investigating trooper could not be reached regarding the injuries and potential charges resulting from the crash. The Ohio County Sheriff's Department also responded to the scene, in addition to fire and emergency units from Triadelphia and Valley Grove fire departments.
While police and emergency responders worked to clear the scene from the initial crash, a sport utility vehicle slid off the westbound lanes of I-70. That vehicle came to rest in the median, and an Ohio County sheriff's deputy responded to that accident. The driver did not appear to be injured.
Tuesday's highway mishaps occurred less than 24 hours after a three-vehicle crash Monday in the same area. Monday's crash occurred when a tractor-trailer jackknifed. That driver is facing a charge of failure to control the vehicle.
