Brothers Meet Up in Belmont County Jail

By GABE WELLS Staff Writer
POSTED: August 27, 2009

There was a family reunion of sorts on Tuesday at the Belmont County Jail.

Powhatan Point brothers Homer and Raymond E. Baker III were booked Tuesday into the jail on unrelated charges, and they remained in custody Wednesday. Powhatan Point Police Chief Chet Oldfield said he transported Homer Baker, 20, to the jail on charges of obstruction, disorderly conduct, menacing and failure to comply. Raymond Baker, 27, turned himself in on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Oldfield said both men have been wanted for at least the past month.

Oldfield said he made a traffic stop of Raymond Baker about a month ago. At that time, Raymond Baker was arrested for driving under suspension, speeding and carrying a concealed weapon. Oldfield said Raymond Baker appeared in court on those charges, and he pleaded guilty to driving under suspension. He was ordered to serve 90 days, but 60 days of that sentence were suspended. Just two days after his court appearance, Oldfield said he saw Raymond Baker driving through Powhatan Point incognito.

"I saw him driving, and he was wearing a toboggan pulled down, trying to be disguised," Oldfield said. "I turned around, and then I saw him walking down the road. I arrested him again, took him to jail and filed a motion to revoke his suspended sentence."

Oldfield said Raymond Baker again pleaded guilty to driving under suspension. He was sentenced to an additional 90 days in jail, but those days will run concurrently with the original 60 days that had been suspended.

Oldfield said he attempted on Aug. 7 to serve warrants on Homer Baker after receiving a report that Baker was threatening people and breaking the windows of residences with a hammer. Oldfield said he passed a vehicle driven by Homer Baker while responding to the scene, and a high-speed pursuit ensued. Oldfield said the pursuit also involved the Shadyside Police Department, and it reached speeds of 90 mph. Homer Baker managed to elude capture at that time. A tip eventually led law enforcement to a Moundsville residence, where Homer Baker was taken into custody. Homer Baker waived extradition Tuesday before he was returned to Belmont County. Homer Baker is being held without bond per a request from Oldfield.
