Girl Turns Knife On Rape Suspect

POWHATAN POINT - A 16-year-old Powhatan Point girl was able to fight off her attacker, stabbing him in the upper chest as he raped her early Thursday.

Suspect Victor Lynn Stevens, 43, of Mount Victory Road remains under armed guard at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, where he taken after he was tracked to his residence by a K-9 unit, according to Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson.

Thompson said Stevens allegedly entered the victim's bedroom window brandishing a knife. Thompson said as Stevens began to assault her, she retrieved the knife and stabbed him in the upper chest.

The victim's mother heard screams and ran into the bedroom, where Thompson said she found her daughter and Stevens struggling for the knife. Stevens allegedly fled through the front door and returned to his home, where police found him a short time later after receiving a report at 1:35 a.m. of a man clad in a bloody shirt walking on Mount Victory Road while holding his arm.

Just moments after that, the victim and her mother arrived at the Powhatan Point Police Department to report the assault. The victim recognized Stevens as a resident of her neighborhood, but Thompson said he wasn't aware of any prior interaction between the suspect and victim.

"She knew his name, but that was about it," said Thompson, who said Stevens' knowledge of where the girl's bedroom window was located leads him to believe Stevens may have been following her. "It's very possible that he had targeted her as a stalker," he said.

According to Thompson, the victim went to an area hospital for examination and was released.

He said the girl's courage in such a terrifying situation was remarkable.

"You can only imagine how traumatized she was at that point," Thompson said. "To gain her composure enough to grab the knife and stab him with it ... that says a lot for her. You can tell she's a fighter."

Thompson said Stevens likely will spend two or three days in the hospital, although he was not aware of Stevens' condition. Charges of aggravated burglary and aggravated rape currently are pending against Stevens with the prosecutor's office. Thompson said additional charges are possible.

Stevens is a registered sex offender who was convicted of gross sexual imposition in 2007. Thompson said he believes the victim in that incident was a 13-year-old handicapped girl.

"I've said in the past that I believe it's impossible to rehabilitate sex offenders," said Thompson, "and this is a classic example."

What a scum bag. I just wish they would give guys like this what they deserve. That poor little girl will have to live this nightmare for the rest of her life. I hope he gets what is coming to him in prison.

Shark, go back and read your own post from 9:36am. You clearly typed "quietly", not quickly as you later tried to claim.

Republican Nazis will seize any opportunity to liberal bash, even by hijacking a thread about a brave girl who fought back at attacker.

Too bad she didn't have some Lorena Bobbit training.

Bluebirds60 - The problem in the Catholic Church was allowing h o m o s e x u a l men to become priests. This is an entirely different matter.

Graysongs, This has nothing to do with 'hate for the church', this is about educating people, supporting victims and protecting kids against sex abuse. ALL KIDS..

We have tons of experience and knowledge about how pedophiles operate, and how they can not be cured. They abuse over and over again. A powerful documentary will give you a glimpse of what we as responsible citizen need to know about pedophiles. "Deliver Us From Evil" by Amy Berg ..and it is not easy to watch, but parents need to know.

This girl is in my heart, she is very brave and I hope her family will find help to get through this trauma.

Adults sexually abusing kids has become an epidemic.. predators will manipulate, deceive, and find a way to access kids. Sheriff Thompson is right, they can NOT be cured.

Kids will never be safe if you choose to be uninformed. Please get educated, this problem is massive and overwhelming.

People have 2 choices, be afraid, defenseless, and rely on the local Constabulary; who by the way are under NO LEGAL REQUIREMENT to intervene between you and mortal danger, OR you can be pro-active and take steps to enhance your own safety and well being.

Judging by the annual number of assaults and murder in the Valley, the local L.E. can't protect you as an individual. And the courts apparently refuse to, by imposing MAXIMUM sentences, in most cases.

And if they did , the State or Federal Supreme courts would over-turn on some a-hole technicality

May GOD look upon this young lady with kindness and grace and give her the strength to physically and mentally survive this attack.

The scum that perpetrated this act will get top notch health care to mend his wounds; and probably a really good lawyer at taxpayer expense. He has the ACLU on his side, somewhere.

It's just a shame the young Lady couldn't stick the Bas***D 2 or 3 more times.

It's too bad that the girl's name can't be published. Hopefully, she's headed back to school in a little while and could use some reward money for her courage. I'd love to donate to that collection.

This subject must be a difficult one for liberals to deal with. On one hand, they may love their children and want them to be safe. On the other, they donate to the ACLU and excuse the behavior of criminal scum. What to do?

Let this be a lesson to those of you with no common sense and no decency.

Liberals are usually victims because they think they have immunity from crime. They think that because they sit around the coffee shop and bash Republicans and praise cop killers, criminals can identify them and let them be.

You do not have immunity from crime. The police cannot and will not protect you. Get a gun, learn how to use it and do not hesitate. If you have trained often enough, your reaction will be second nature. Your response should be on reflex. Men, buy handguns for the ladies in your life. Teach them how to use it and to have no fear. Criminals are cowards and they fear an armed "victim".

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Shark, at this point it has become obvious that your agenda is to spark a heated discussion rather than to express concern for the victim or offer logical advice. Personally, I won't allow your ignorance or flare for drama draw a rise from me. Find a form of entertainment elsewhere.

I have four young daughters and I live less than two miles from this rapist. If they allow "it" to move back on our road I will move my family out of this town. Our children have the RIGHT to feel safe in their own homes, especially in the sanctuary of their own bedrooms. This creature will get six months, maybe a year, and then be back on the prowl and we will see him in the news again. I hope he suffers and dies from complications of his well deserved injury. Too bad she didn't stab him in his own "weapon". Or across the throat. Poor girl, we are praying for you in the Binni house.

Shark, I will agree with your stance that people must take measures to stay safe in their own homes. I moved out of the Valley years ago to live near a metropolitan area, and I take cautions here I never would have taken back home. My fear, however, is that while her family can keep her protected for now, eventually she will want to visit news sites such as this one, and when she does, I'm concerned that comments like your original post can be interpreted by her that others believe that this is somehow her fault and she could have prevented it. She's already living with the guilt of stabbing another human being in addition to the trauma she has sustained. She doesn't need additional guilt, and this is in no way her or her mother's fault.

OSU....I didn't say I needed to know anything further. People should be safe in their own homes. Certainly we should be safe but we are only as safe as we are prepared to deal with the unexpected. We live in an ever more dangerous world with increasing numbers of bad people looking to rob, steal, cause harm. All the more reason for more guns and locks. In my own home, I have dead bolts on all doors that require a key to lock and unlock from the inside. The downside to this of course is that you need to know where the key is if you need to get out quickly. I realize most homes do not have this type of lock. Hopefully any lessons learned in this terrible incident might help prevent it from happening elsewhere.

My prayers go out to this girl and her family - she showed guts and courage and is a TRUE PATRIOT. Next time, if there even IS a next time (there should not be one), this scum needs to meet "Mr. Mossberg" or "Mrs. Glock". Total POS on society.

Bluebirds60 - This young lady did what she needed to do. If she'd killed him, it would be completely justifiable, although for her sake I'm glad she doesn't have to live the rest of her life with having killed a man. I don't see where a priest has anything to do with it, though, or are you just looking to use this to capitalize on a hatred for the Church?
