The Switzerland of Ohio Local School District Board of Education heard Thursday that floor and site plans are being developed for the planned new Monroe Central High School and the Beallsville School complex.

Gary Balog, project architect, president and chief executive officer of Balog Steines Hendricks & Manchester, and Byron Manchester, vice president, showed drawings of the proposed new buildings and answered questions about them.

The plan presented for the new Beallsville building featured a two-story structure and prompted questions about the possibility of a single-story facility.

Officials said the two-story building would not require as much earthwork and would be more economical. The topography and the smaller roof surface were the main economic factors. Both buildings, as well as the other proposed new buildings in the district-wide construction project will have geothermal climate control.

Balog also said his firm would be starting work on the Hannibal-Sardis School project before working on the Powhatan Point School because the site for the Powhatan building has not been finalized.

The board approved combining the Sardis and Hannibal junior high sports programs.

It also voted to purchase fleet insurance for its school buses from F.W. Schumacher Insurance Agency at a total cost of $33,332 for the upcoming school year.

Members also approved a resolution providing for the sale and issuance of school improvement bonds not to exceed $25,000 and the issuance of school improvement bonds, not to exceed $10 million for qualified school construction bonds.

In addition, the board approved a supplemental life insurance program to be paid for by employees and gave Superintendent Larry Elliott authority to employ personnel needed to begin the new school year.
