Valley Grove Woman Charged with Embezzlement

POSTED: July 21, 2009

Wheeling - Valley Grove resident Bernie D. Metz, 56, a former employee of Center Valley Credit Union in Wheeling, appeared before U.S. Magistate Judge James E. Seibert in Wheeling this morning on charges of embezzlement involving the credit union between 2004 and 2009.

Center Valley Federal Credit Union, formerly located in rented office space at 2000 Eoff St., Wheeling, was found to be insolvent by the National Credit Union Administration and shut down. The credit union was liquidated last February and at the time, served 3,150 members and had deposits of approximately $8 million. It opened in 1975 to serve Ohio Valley Medical Center employees and people in the surrounding community.

Metz was released on a $1 million personal recognizance bond.

This is truly a horrible thing that she has done and if she is found guilty she should pay the pentalty that the judge or a jury of her peers see fit. But, to all of you think that "she's a piece of sxxx" or want her "burned at the stake." Rememember that i life we must all pay for our bad behavior and "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." John 8:7

This has nothing to do with "how nice or generous" a person is. It has EVERYTHING to do with greed, and living a lifestyle far above your means. Vehicles were bought and given to Bernie and her husband; and both her kids. I see there are 2 credit cards - one in her husband's name ONLY and one in Eric's name ONLY - and pymts to these CC's were made from the CVCU operating acct. (This is from the indictment.) SO - does this make them co-conspirators?

The other issue is that it was going on back as far as 2007, so likely had become a habit. How there could be no checks and balances for so long befuddles me. Regular banks require their executives to take mandatory time off every so often, so any potential monkey business can be averted. Is it the same with credit unions? Did the board of CVCU implement such a policy?

How can you convict her without any proof? Maybe the feds have the proof, but you have no idea what it is, so how can she get a fair trail? A lot of you have already convicted her.

Wheelingnomore...Try not to focus on the amount of $ that may have been taken..Focus on the amount of Trust that may have been taken. $ is $..People are Human. She deserves a fair trial. However I suspect Guilt in this one.

I wanted to also add this. I would erge everyone not to prejudge or point the finger. I am not saying Bernie is not guilty but although sometimes it is hard have faith in our legal system. I have seen hundreds of people charged with crimes in my Law Enforcement career some of which went to prison some of which were found not guilty. This is hard on many members of the community and I know my family is not the only one who suffered from this. This is a free country and you are free to post any comments you wish; however being one of the families that suffered from this I would urge people to be careful in what they say. This whole situation is just sad.

We moved to the Ohio Valley about two years ago from across the US. Bernie and her family took us in to their home for Christmas and many other holidays we thought she was a good friend of ours. This whole situation makes my stomach sick. My family still has not recovered from this and is still waiting for our money. I have been in Law Enforcement work for 8 years and one thing I have learned is to never judge anyone; everyone will have to answer eventually. I am not shocked to see this; but am saddened at the same time for all the 3000 plus members of the bank who were hurt by this. We also pray for the employees of the bank who are suffering everyday and black marked for life because of this crap.

Not sure what Obama and health care, and democratic dollars has to do with this. Unless you personally experienced the outcome of finding no access to your hard earned monies can you understand. I am not going into the "federally reserved" you get your money...........eventually. In the mean time, you cannot access your bank cards and checks will be NSF. It took me months to recoup. On my own, lucky the day the NCUA took my money hours before liquifying I kept out cash. I was lucky to have family if I needed them, some didn't. I have always not been apart of accusations, it is sad to think this happened. If the truth comes out, I hope in the long run the NCUA sees the emotional and physical hard ship it caused, I will never venture again in a credit union. I keep 2 banks and cash on hand since. I stay strong in feeling that the NCUA was also fraud.

Did Shawn Hannity say that President Obama wants to make private health care insurance companies "illegal"....LOL

That will get the 20%ers going good. We can add those who believe that to the wackos who are still yelling that Obama doesnt have a birth certificate and those with all the tea bags.

Wackos. G"No"P party.

I got a laugh out of the repub who showed that amazing and confusing chart on the floor of Congress saying it was the "new Democratic health care system", turns out it is the current health care system...lol

If their lips are moving.....

You need to re read the article. The article doesn't say she embezzled $8 millon. That's the amount of deposits the credit union had. It doesn't state how much she took.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? I sure wouldn't want to be hanged if I was innocent.

Apparently, this woman stole $8 million and has 7 cars, a restaurant and other assets. She has been released on bond?!!! See, the criminal justice system is not influenced by race, it IS influenced by economic status.

Would a poor black or white woman be released on a personal recognizance bond after allegedly stealing $8 million?

Who was auditing this bank? Did she have superiors? Where was the oversight? 2004-2009 is roughly 5 years. She stole an average of $183.15 EVERY HOUR for 5 years and NOBODY else noticed or was in on it?

Sad.

Heck, this just the kind of person the Obama administration is looking to fill the position of Czar, assuming that she also cheats on her taxes! Maybe she should be the next banking regulator?

True that we should not try the accused in the media. But the federal government must have some evidence or there would not be charges filed.

The tragedy is the loss of the depositors and as noted, loss of jobs by the employees of the credit union and restaurant.

I do not wish anyone a happy life in prison, and I am not happy to see someone in trouble, however, I do believe when you do something wrong and dishonest it comes back to haunt you. I don't blame people for being bitter and even I found people that downed others for their frustration after loosing their money annoying. Obviously these were the ones that didn't have money invested and were able to pay their bills on time. The ones I really feel for is all of those that lost jobs. Do you realize how many jobs were lost between the credit union and the restaurant? I lost money and I got it back. With a failing economy these people have to go out and look for jobs when the unemployment rate is higher than it has been in years. So when you see people putting comments that seem a little bitter, let them vent their anger, you have to think about where their frustration is coming from and none of us wanted to hear "don't say bad things about people and wait and see what happens s
