Valley Celebrates Independence Day

‘Rockets’ red glare’ shines over Oglebay

WHEELING - New Martinsville residents Sean and Lisa Yoho had never before witnessed the Oglebay Independence Day celebration fireworks, but they knew they were going to be in for quite the show Friday.

"I'm pumped for this," Sean Yoho said prior to the explosion of fireworks at Schenk Lake that ran in conjunction with the Patriotic Fountain Show.

Though it was only July 3, the Yohos joined hundreds of other fireworks fans for the lakeside celebration that filled the skies over Oglebay Park with a medley of vivid blues, reds, yellows and several other colors.

The Yohos' children, McKinlee, Faith and Isabella, also enjoyed the show.

"I love to see the purple fireworks," Faith Yoho said.

Sitting alongside the Yohos were Allison Raper and her daughter, Carlee Sweeney, of Paden City.

"This is a very good event. We have been here for the (Winter) Festival of Lights, but this is our first time for these fireworks," Raper said.

As the professional pyrotechnics were in motion, many children and even some adults decided to try their hands with sparklers and other small devices.

A long-time fan of the show at the lakeside Friday was St. Clairsville resident Dion Saffell.

"This is a really beautiful park, and the fireworks are really nice," he said.

Saffell also said he and his family enjoy the ambiance of the event.

"There is such a great family atmosphere here, and everyone always has a really great time," he said.

A number of Independence Day celebrations are set throughout the Ohio Valley today, with some to take place Sunday.

They include fireworks in Cadiz, set for 10 p.m. Sunday at Sally Buffalo Park; and fireworks in Woodsfield, slated to get under way at dusk Sunday at the football field.

There should be limits on the right to vote. Let's face it, if the franchise were restricted to those who pay taxes, no Democrats would ever be elected at the federal level. We should require that all voters pass a basic skills test AND have contributed tax dollars. People who contribute nothing have no right voting on expenditures. People who know nothing have no business voting on ANYTHING.

I have said this in other forums and it bears repeating: they should do away with cross filing, straight party ticket and political party designations after a candidates' name. Voters should vote for the PERSON, not the party. There are many sheep in Pennsylvania who vote straight D because that's what their parents did in the Depression.

We should make voting a challenge, not make it easier. If you don't understand the issues and the candidates and if you contribute nothing to the well-being of the nation, you should have no right to have your voice heard.

Just my two cents.

wwbarron - It may not be all that unique. In my county, a person running for a judgeship, for example, need only win the Democrat primary. Literally. No Republican judge will ever be elected and no one bothers to try. Yet our state in general votes Republican and the legislature is in Republican control.

wwbarron - Never really thought about it, but if it's a "Democrat valley", how is it that the other party always seems to carry the rest of the state? I seem to recall that all WV's electoral votes have gone to Republicans over the past 3 electoral cycles. Is that correct? Are you guys out of step with the rest of the state?

She quit to make money on her RepubliCON circuits, just think of the lobby factor buying her in the Whitehouse. Oh My God

Bossman011 - Check the posts and you'll see that those who hate her had to bring it in. I believe it's some sort of "obsessive disorder" with them. A politician they hate has resigned from her office, but still has the power to make them wet their pants. It's uncanny!

What does goofy Sara Palin have to do with the fireworks? Other than she just fizzled out and will fade away.

I only wish Tina Fey was still part of the Saturday Night Live cast while Palin is out and about. This past election was one of the best in recent memory for comedic fodder...For some of the parodies they did on Palin, they didn't even have to write a script...They used her own answers to interview questions word for word and everyone thought the whole skit was a joke!

I have no position one way or the other on Palin as a potential candidate. Many of her personal choices seem to reflect admirable character, though. However, she may be far smarter than many here and elsewhere suspect. She has extremely high visibility and the level of public profile to speak out and be heard. Her job as governor of Alaska would be a distraction and a limitation on her. Her political enemies, whether they're Ds or Rs, may be quite premature in celebrating her "demise".

Palin will be seen as the quitter that she is. If she can't stand the heat in the kitchen from Alaska, how would she perform in the fire of Washington DC?

I saw the Oglebay fireworks last night and they were spectacular.

I hope she continues to speak publically. She is absolutely hilarious, in a funny train wreck way.
