First Bus To Moundsville And Glen Dale In 31 Years

McMECHEN - It was standing room only from McMechen on the first Ohio Valley Regional Transportation Authority bus to Glen Dale and Moundsville in more than 31 years.

The Highlands route also began today with six passengers on a bus arriving at the Ohio County shopping area about 10:30 a.m. The Highlands bus will operate eight hours a day, between 8:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The round trip is 90 minutes.

The Moundsville bus starts at the Capitol Music Hall and makes stops at 16th and Market streets, Glenwood, Edgington Lane, Elm Grove, Wal-Mart, Old Navy, Target and Cabela's before heading back to Wheeling.

The bus left from the Capitol Theatre at 8:15 a.m., with 12 passengers and by the time the bus departed McMechen it had 30 passengers, six of whom had to stand.

After making a stop at Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, the next drop-off point was at Wal-Mart which proved to be the most popular destination as 17 people got off there.

Thirteen of those passengers headed to Wal-Mart while four others were seen walking toward the adjacent Burger King.

The next stop was at the Busy Beaver Plaza where six individuals got off the bus.

The bus continued to TeleTech Drive in south Moundsville, and stopped at the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, before stopping in front of the Moundsville Food and Drug for what was slated to be a 10-minute layover.

However, for this maiden voyage it became a six-minute stop as the bus did arrive four minutes late.

Thomas Hvizdos, OVRTA executive director, who rode the bus, was very pleased not only that it was standing room only, but also that the bus was able to make the run and only be four minutes behind schedule.

Among those taking a round-trip bus ride were McMechen Council members Penny Goodwin, who is now the city's representative on the OVRTA board; Charlie Pyle, former councilman; former OVRTA board member Dave Kobasko; and long-time city resident George Bilich.

Kobasko, who served on council from 2002 until just recently when he was appointed as the city's fire chief, said he and the others rode the bus in support of the effort to bring back bus service to Glen Dale and McMechen.

Kobasko said he was a substitute bus driver for OVRTA in 2004 and 2005, and that when he drove the McMechen to Warwood route, many residents, mainly senior citizens, questioned him about why the bus didn't go to Glen Dale and Moundsville. It was because of this that he asked the mayor of the city of McMechen, (first Kenny Robbins and then Paul Maxwell) who served on the OVRTA board to try and have bus service extended. When current Mayor Mike Gracik assumed office he appointed Kobasko to the board, and he continued his efforts to provide bus service southward beyond McMechen. He added that Mayor Gracik had planned to run the "first bus" but that he had to work.

Kobasko said he is hopeful that the residents of these two cities will pass levies to keep bus service to these communities, noting that it would be very beneficial financially, especially to Moundsville.

Kobasko added, "I'm was very glad to see Bob Lally as the driver, as he knows the McMechen people, having been the driver on the McMechen run."

Mountaner4life. You must be the "crybaby" I refer to... It would seem to me and apparently the majority of people writting here, that the people of Benwood, Wheeling, McMechen.... WANT to go to Glen Dale hospital, Wal*Mart, etc. As a driver it was the people of the areas paying the levys who were asking to go to places with buisnesses (excuse me B-wood does have a small Krogers and a hot dog/casin (owned by the police) in thier "buisness sistrict"). yes $26000 for 9 minuites (2.3 miles)of service @ trip down Marshall back out along Rte 2 vs 36 minuites 10 miles. So quityr******* and get with the program. Moundsville & Glendale will see the light and pay thier share once they see the light...

So if you get on the bus downtown, you drive around for 45 minutes picking everyone up to make the 10 minute drive out to the Highlands? and then another 45 minutes getting back. An hour and a half of your day just so you can go to Wal-Mart?

Get used to it, folks. This is "Back to the Future" insofar as transportation is concerned, and it is only the beginning. Traveling via bus will grow as fuel prices return to triple digit territories. Those who are now dismissing public transit will soon be happy to catch one to go to work or shopping. Too bad they tore up the old trolley car tracks.

Bus service to the Highlands is the beginning of the end. The increase in sales will be miniscule while the increase in crime will be disgusting.

The Highlands is nice in that you cannot walk to it and you cannot take a bus. As soon as a shopping plaza can be accessed by nearby neighborhoods and public buses, the shoplifting, theft, vandalism and destruction start.

Ross Park Mall is the nicest, most upscale mall in the Tri-State area. It does not have bus service from Pittsburgh. This keeps the criminals in their own neighborhoods.

Sounds harsh? Well, sometimes the truth hurts.

TimsWV: If you were a driver then I am sure you know that people ride the bus more to wheeling than to Benwood stores. Many people work in wheeling, go to the hospital, visit family, go to church and so on. This bus does not go to the bwd business district and turn around. I keep hearing you say Benwood is DEAD. Benwood pays $96,000 a year to OVORTA. McMechen pays $26,000!!!! What town is DEAD? I guess you do not get the whole pisture. Who is going to pay for the bus? $137,000 per year for this free service to moundsville? $26,000 per yr from McMechen? Maybe your town should up you cotribution since your leaders are the leading force behind this bus. Moundsville and GD are getting the free service. Just let the voters vote on it. Their councils won't let them as long as they are getting it for FREE!!

As a McMechen long time resiadent. It is GREAT to see service to Moundsville again. While I think Moundsville should/will pass a levy to pay for it, especially since thier buisness are getting to serve more people $$$$ therefore paying more tax $$$. EITHER way it is a GREAT benifit to the residents of S. Wheeling, BENWOOD, (despite one crybaby), McMechen to be able to go to a real town (Benwood is DEAD) to shop at real stores. GREAT JOB OVRTA... BTW I too am a x-driver for OVRTA and was frequently asked the same questions re. Moundsville.

Mr. Wood I agree. However you do have to remember that this will cost the cities who do pay $137,000. The bus service needs to go to Moundsville and Glen Dale but they also need to pay for it. $137,000 is alot of money. Only oe year ago OVORTA was broke and had to raise prices. So now they add more cost. You know they will never make that kind of money on this route. I have not heard a single person against the bus going to these locations. The only complaint how OVORTA is going to pay for it. One way they are, cutting service to those who pay. Moundsville and GD need to get on the wagon and let the voters vote on this levy. Give the people a change to speak.

I think this is great for the cities of Moundsville and Glendale. I think they should add a couple more stops in Moundsville. They should keep the bus service in Moundsville because it will help a lot of people out that want to go to wheeling or the Highlands that don't have a ride there. This will help people who work in Wheeling also.

From what I've read in the newspaper there is one goof in Benwood complaining and that is about it. Sounds like this run may turn out to be the most popular run on the line. Who would have thought?? A run that takes people where they want to go. What a concept. Good job OVRTA for giving the people what they want.

I still see no reason why GD or Moundsville should pay for this. They did not ask for it. If the residents of other cities want to come down here then they can pay for it. If Wheeling decided to take a daily bus to downtown Pittsburgh would it be expected that the citizens of PGH would pay for some it?
