A convicted sex offender is facing more charges after he allegedly gave a false address and telephone number to police.

John Wilson, 24, was arrested Wednesday on three counts of failure to register or provide registration changes.

The registered sex offender was being held in the Northern Regional Jail on $15,000 bond, pending a preliminary hearing.

According to West Virginia State Police Senior Trooper R.J. Busick, the investigation began April 18, when Wilson reported to the State Police Moundsville detachment for his annual sex offender registration.

Busick said Wilson listed his address as 1902 Marshall St., McMechen, but a few days later, officers learned from the McMechen and Benwood postmasters that there is no such address.

Busick said Wilson also gave a false telephone number.

During Wilson's arrest, officers also learned he went to Columbus at the end of April, where he stayed for more than 19 days, Busick said.

By law, a registered sex offender is required to notify authorities within 10 days of a move to another state.

In 2007, Wilson was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse after abusing a teenage boy.

He served about two months in prison and was released.

If convicted of the latest charges, he could be sentenced to one to five years in prison for each count.
