Garbage Truck Wreck Kills Driver
By GABE WELLSBARNESVILLE - A Barnesville man died after he rolled a garbage truck Tuesday morning, and a Colerain man was hospitalized as a result of an unrelated crash.
Laco C. Pickens, 74, a resident of Bethesda Street in Barnesville, was killed at about 11 a.m. Tuesday just north of Hendrysburg near milepost 21 of Ohio 800. The crash scene is in the area of Interstate 70, about 10 miles north of Barnesville.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jim Tracy said excessive speed is listed as the cause of the crash. He said Pickens was traveling south in a 1993 Mack trash truck. He lost control of the vehicle in a left curve, and the truck went off the right side of the road. The truck went back onto the road, across both lanes of Ohio 800 and off the left side of the road.
Tracy said the vehicle dug into a ditch and flipped end over end. Pickens was thrown through the windshield, and the truck landed on him. The sergeant said a motorist noticed the crash and called for help.
In an unrelated accident, a Belmont County man was listed Tuesday in critical condition after being thrown from his motorcycle and onto the windshield of the vehicle that struck him.
Duane Rose, 70, of Colerain was transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center following a two-vehicle crash at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday in Colerain, according to Patrol Trooper Mike Nelson. Nelson said the motorcycle driven by Rose was struck from the rear by a 1999 Plymouth Neon driven by Renee Doty, 28, of St. Clairsville. Rose was wearing a helmet, and he was taken to the hospital by a Colerain emergency medical squad.
Nelson said Rose was traveling west on a 2006 Harley-Davidson XL1200R and stopped to turn south. The trooper said Rose was turning into a Colerain business to get coffee as he typically does each morning.
Nelson said Doty did not see Rose on the road, and the trooper noted the headlights of oncoming traffic were in her face before she struck the motorcycle from behind. The trooper said Doty has not been charged.
