Valley Backs Event, Benefits From It

For the News-Register
POSTED: July 18, 2008

The annual Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta is an example of how local residents with a vision can make it reality - while giving the entire valley a bit of a boost.

As we have pointed out previously, the philosophy behind creation of the Heritage Port in downtown Wheeling was to capitalize on our city's history as a hub of Ohio River-based commerce - and to exploit the beautiful riverfront setting for the future. Special events held there are one method of doing that. A variety of them held during spring, summer and fall months attract tens of thousands of visitors to the city. That is good for the local economy.

In 2006, Debbie and Dan Joseph of Wheeling decided that one of their interests - vintage hydroplane racing boats - could be used for the good of the community. They established the Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta, and it was an immediate success. After its first year, the American Power Boat Association honored the local regatta with its "Vintage Event of the Year" award.

That award had never been given to any community two years in a row - until this year. The APBA once again has designated Wheeling for the award, as the Josephs explained during a Wheeling City Council meeting this week.

Their appearance was appropriate because the regatta, scheduled for Labor Day weekend this year, truly has been a community affair. Local government officials and workers have provided critical support, as have some local businesses. Many volunteers work hard to make the event a success. And those involved in other special events held during the same weekend, including Fort Henry Days festival organizers and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, have been enthusiastic in viewing the regatta as a complement to them, not a competitor.

Special events in Ohio County this Labor Day weekend will be good for our entire area in a variety of ways. We commend the Josephs and all involved in the regatta for adding a new and highly enjoyable event to the mix.
