Couple Takes Over As Officers

By ART LIMANN
POSTED: July 14, 2008

The Moundsville Salvation Army has many needs, but now it has a couple of new leaders to help fulfill them.

Capts. Charley and Kristine Adams have been appointed to run the Salvation Army in Moundsville. The couple came to the city in late June after leaving a similar position in Weirton, where they started their Salvation Army duties.

The couple is originally from Texas and joined the Salvation Army in 2001 after volunteering to assist those in need following a tropical storm that hit the Houston area. After training in Atlanta and becoming officers in 2002, they were assigned to the office in Weirton - a city they had never heard of.

Since they arrived in Moundsville, they have been getting familiar with the community and are looking forward to meeting the needs of the area. According to Adams, the Moundsville office is responsible for mainly Marshall County but it does work in Wetzel and Tyler counties as well.

"I'm still learning about the area. We want to get out in the community and meet the people," Charley Adams said. "We need to find out what the needs are."

He noted he does not want to duplicate the work of other agencies. And as fuel costs continue to rise, Adams said, "we will have to get more creative with fundraising, outreaches and ministries."

Kristine Adams pointed to a need to improve the exterior of the Army's 110-year-old building, located on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Seventh Street in Moundsville, to make it more inviting.

"It's a grand building. It's a gorgeous building, but it needs some TLC," she said.

Services are held at its Moundsville building at 11 a.m. every Sunday. Sunday school is at 10 a.m. Both captains also are ordained ministers.
