Beer Delivery Man Hit By Vehicle

A beer delivery man struck by a vehicle in West Liberty is expected to fully recover, according to the investigating trooper. But the man hit and the driver who struck him are both at fault, the West Virginia State Police sergeant said today.

Wheeling resident Greg Luff was transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center after being hit by a car at about 3 p.m. Wednesday on W.Va. 88 in West Liberty, according to Sgt. Scott Adams of the Wheeling Detachment.

Adams said Courtney South, 19, Moundsville, was behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Cavalier involved in the collision.

Adams said Luff loaded beer on a dolly on or near the road, and he was struck as he was taking it to a nearby business. Luff was injured when he hit the windshield of the vehicle driven by South. The sergeant said he does not expect charges to be filed, but both Luff and South erred in the incident.

"There was probably a dual fault there," Adams said. "The beer truck was parked on the road, and a witness said the driver of the vehicle wasn't paying attention to the roadway. There is evidence to support fault of both."

OVMC officials on Wednesday said Luff was in fair condition. Adams said Luff suffered a "pretty good" abrasion to his head, but he believes the Wheeling man will be OK.

"If he wasn't released last night, he should be released today," Adams said.

Adams noted that 14 cans of Budweiser were destroyed in the crash.

I used to live in West Liberty. From the picture, directly behind the trooper's vehicle is a sharp 90 degree turn to the left. The driver could not have been going more than 30 but I thoroughly believe if she floored it around the turn, and was talking and not watching the road, she probably didn't even brake until after he bounced. BTW Did I miss the mention of a cell phone in the article, or is that an assumption made by commenters?

Female + 19 + cell phone + car + speed = disaster waiting to happen.

Every beer truck I see in the valley parks on the road when delivering to stores except the huge retail supermarkets. I guess this means I will try to get some "free" beer next time I see an opportunity.

I'm sorry, but to be behind the wheel of a car you should at the very minimum be paying attention so for her not to be charged with something is just ridiculous. This isn't just a "whoops"! She hit a PERSON!!!

I would guess that speed and or cell phone activity may have contributed to this accident.
