Youths Receive $63,000 in Stifel Awards

By IAN HICKS
POSTED: July 10, 2008

Ohio County students received a total of $63,000 in Stifel Awards Wednesday at a ceremony held in their honor at Wheeling Park High School.

The cash awards were given to 214 fifth- through 12th-grade students at Ohio County public schools who have achieved excellence throughout the year in their studies and on standardized achievement tests.

"We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students who have received the Stifel awards," said Ohio County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dianna Vargo. "This program encourages academic excellence among our students."

Speaking on behalf of the Stifel family was Joan Stamp, a relative of the late George E. Stifel who established the award decades ago.

She said Stifel, a Wheeling native born in 1849, was the co-founder of a department store in downtown Wheeling.

In 1926, at the age of 77, he decided to start an endowment trust to encourage public education for local schoolchildren.

To be eligible for an award, students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or more and be both an Ohio County resident and United States citizen.

Sixteen prizes were given for each grade at Wheeling Park High School, seven per grade at each middle school and seven in each fifth grade of elementary schools.

In her closing remarks, Stamp thanked WesBanco, the trust fund's administrator as well as local educators for a job well done.

She congratulated the winners and wished them a great summer.

Vargo expressed her appreciation to the students for their efforts this school year and invited all in attendance to stay after the ceremony for refreshments provided by the school.

"Thank you for representing Ohio County Schools so well," she told them.

It was very interesting and thoughtful of Ms. Stamp to come forward to speak for her ancestor - Mr.Stifel - and distribute the stipends on his behalf.
