WVDOT Seeks $4.3M for Narrows

By JOSELYN KING
POSTED: June 18, 2008

WHEELING - The West Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking $4.3 million in federal money to improve the section of W.Va. 2 known as the Glen Dale Narrows.

The project is among those the West Virginia Department of Transportation has asked the Belomar Regional Council to add to the its fiscal years 2008-2011 Transportation Improvement Program. Such projects much be included in the state and local TIP to be eligible for federal funding.

Robert Muransky, transportation director for Belomar, said Belomar's board is expected to have a special meeting at noon today at the Belomar offices at 105 Bridge Street Plaza in Wheeling - largely for the purpose of approving the addition of the Glen Dale Narrows project to the 2008 fiscal year transportation plan.

"Once the paperwork is done, the state can request federal authorization," he said. "These request are routine, and there should not be much discussion from the board.

"All of the projects have been programmed by the state. They shouldn't be asking us to put them in without expectation that funding is there. If they felt the funding was not available for these projects, they wouldn't be processing them."

The West Virginia DOT has proposed that pilings be installed on W.Va. 2 along the Glen Dale Narrows to correct rock slide problems there. The estimated cost to do the work is $3.2 million.

The state agency also has requested that a project to install a concrete wall along the same roadway be included in the program at an additional $1.1 million.

Also in Marshall County, the West Virginia DOT wants to add a right-of-way phase to the Woodland Bridge superstructure replacement project on W.Va. 2, and this project comes with a $50,000 pricetag.

The Ohio Department of Transportation also has asked that some projects be added to the Belmont County TIP:

  • The first of these seeks funding to include a preliminary engineering phase to the rehabilitation of a section of Interstate 70. The engineering phase is anticipated to cost $3 million.
  • ODOT wants to scale back a resurfacing project on Ohio 147 and Ohio 149. Retained sections on Ohio 147 would include an area stretching from milepost 14.73 to 19.99, and on Ohio 149 from milepost 14.02 to 20.78. The resulting cost is estimated at $1,881,380.
  • ODOT is also seeking that a "transportation enhancement/scenic byway project"on the Ohio University Eastern campus be included in the TIP so that it would be eligible for federal funding. The money would be used for a roofing project.

KTBass, build an Undo's there and I’ll bet a new road as smooth as a baby's behind is MIRACULOUSLY approved.

This stretch of road should have been fixed a few dozen lives ago. As a teenager learning to drive in Marshall County, you dreaded driving into the narrows. I've lost several friends to its dangerous curves and falling rocks not to mention its drop-off on the west side. Simply, it's about time!

Honest this is no comparison to the tunnel cut through. That is a dumb comparison. Look across the country at all the mountain cutthroughs. They do not have this same problem. The narrows stuck a road in an already dangerous hillside. The cutthrough could be done with NO maintenance needed.

This is why making a cut thru wheeling hill is a mistake. It will be more of a maintiance problem than the tunnels. Remember the tunnels got no repairs for 50 plus years except for an inefficient lighting system. Pull the tile off and paint the walls white and let it leak!
