McCain More Eager For Confrontation

By The Intelligencer
POSTED: June 16, 2008

For a candidate who has insinuated that Sen. John McCain is too old to handle the stress of the presidency, Sen. Barack Obama has a strange way of demonstrating his own abilities. He will provide an example of his own limitations on Friday, when he visits Columbus.

It has been no secret thus far during the campaign that Obama does best in highly controlled, scripted appearances. He plans one for Friday, when he will go to Columbus — to appear at an invitation-only event for a limited number of senior citizens.

Meanwhile, McCain has begun the series of “town hall” meetings in which he asked Obama to participate. As one last week in which McCain faced some questions that were difficult to handle demonstrates, the format is a rough-and-tumble brand of campaigning. Obama has yet to agree to participate with McCain.

During the primary election season, Obama insulated himself from reporters who might, after all, have elicited off-the-cuff reactions that could have embarrassed the candidate.

At some point, however, Obama’s preference for friendly, no-surprises crowds will become so evident that he will have no choice but to face McCain, head to head. Confrontation, after all, often is the name of the game in the presidency — and McCain seems more prepared to handle it.

I have some of my fondest childhood memories in Wheeling/Moundsville. I was last there in 2003 and saw that some of the neighborhoods I played in looked like a f--king bomb was dropped on them. Houses that should have been torn down falling down on their own. I have personally been to third world countries that had more going for them. Coinicidently this was at the exact time the US soldiers were 'helping' the Iraqi's pull down the statue of Saddam. Too bad your president is wasting so much money trying to inflict democracy on people who hate us now and will continue to do so when maybe a portion of that money coould go to rebuilding the infrastucture of our crumbling cities.

Notice how the anti-Obama people on these message are anything except PRO-McCain. How sad it must be for you all not to have a candidate in this election.

Russell, if you hate it so bad, why do you keep coming back to this website? WHY is it OK for Mr. and Mrs. Obama, Reverend Wrong and Father Flegler to make racist comments about white people? I was just applying the standards being used by the opposition. When is the next Methadone Clinic Visit, Russell?

georgetwin Obama's full name is Barack Hussien Obama not Mohammad. By writing this you show us what you are, just another WV bigot. McCain's middle name is Sidney, does that make him Austrailian? or Jewish? or What? God I'm glad my folks moved me away from 'the Friendly City' when I was just a kid because I actually take the time to look into what people are about and not just sling sterotypical slurs at them based on their name, family origin, or skin color. When's the next cross burning georgetwin?

I would just LOVE to be between these two clowns at ANY debate ANY time ANY place! They would not see the passive Perot at the podium this time!

ktbass: Just admit that you weren't going to vote for any Democrat anyway.

These debates will imo outline the most significant difference between two presdiential candidates since 1960.

Neither candidate will be in the least afraid, and the interested among us will watch, listen and decide who has the brains and who has the guts to say it straight and not spread more manure on American voters.

WV26003, COW COOKIES! Without a Teleprompter, Barack Hussein Muhammad Obama is DEAD MEAT and he know it!

GeorgeTwin, it has nothing to do with fear. Senator McCain knows he is the one with the disadvantage, and he will use any scheme or ploy (like a gas tax holiday) to try and level the playing field. The DNC and Senator Obama know better. Too bad for you, huh?

WV26003, what is Barack Hussein Muhammad Obama afraid of?

Why should Senator Obama have to lower himself to McCain's standards? The debates will happen in due course like they always do --- AFTER THE CONVENTIONS.

KTBass, BBekket & Topsie, SHHHH! Don’t tell anyone, but our checks are in the mail to pay for our ambushing Barak Hussein Muhammad Obama in Columbus. Just go to the thrift store and buy a cane and a gray haired wig. Don’t worry about transportation, President Bush said we can catch a ride on The Black Helicopters. They are on the way to make sure the floods President Bush caused in The Midwest were devastating enough and dropping us off in Columbus will be no problem.

Tonight was the first in a much-hyped series of 'town hall' forums scheduled by John McCain's campaign, in which Barack Obama had been challenged to show up to discuss the issues directly with the GOP nominee. Except, as Fox News reported, McCain's campaign misled the public about the nature of the event. The forum was "billed by the McCain campaign as a town hall with independent and Democratic voters," but Fox News noted at the end that the audience was actually "made up of invited guests and supporters."

Debates are more about who has the best COACH. Debate candidates will be coached on every possible question that may be asked and therefore BOTH candidates will simply produce a coached response. Debates prove little about a candidate.

McCain's so called town halls are actually rallies hosted by the local Republican Party. They are scripted with plants in the audience to ask prepared questions. Does this newspaper have any integrity? Why always misinformation?

Yes! Bush did it!

I believe he even signed into law the "McCain doin' Town Hall Meetings while Obama does Insulated Controlled Appearances" Bill. It became law about 10 days ago.

For the record, Bush is also THE VERY reason why my coffee tastes lousy this morning.

Whereas the Bush visit to Wheeling a couple years ago, funded by this conservative newspaper, was a free-for-all, no-holds-barred event open to fans and dissenters alike in which the President responded to a wide variety of tough questions with clarity and grace. Just like all the events he attends. Am I right, good sirs?
