Manchin Has Class

Governor visits WLSC; speaks to students

During a visit to West Liberty State College on Thursday,West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin talked about higher education, teacher salaries and the future of downtown Wheeling.

Speaking to students in professor Erik Aroot’s state and local government course, he also shared insight about three characteristics students must have to be successful. Manchin told them the only handicap in life is having a bad attitude.

‘‘There are three things you need to be successful, and one of them is a product — most of the time in today’s world, it’s you,’’ Manchin said. ‘‘The second thing is value. Are you going in at a higher value than what the market demands? .... And the third is service ability and sustainability. Be able to sell it. No matter how good it is, if it’s out of the market, they won’t buy.’’

Manchin said in politics, the politician is the product. In his own campaign for governor of West Virginia, he noted, his product is to do what he can to make the state better.

He also said being a politician is a public service — not self serving.

Upon becoming governor, Manchin said, he knew he West Virginia was a great product because of its energy, water and great location. He also spoke about improvements he has made in the state in the past four years.

‘‘We were ranked eight in the nation in Expansion Magazine as the best place to expand a business,’’ Manchin said. ‘‘So I know we have arrived at the marketplace. We also have a rainy day account, which is 13.2 percent of the state’s general revenue — we are third in the nation of having the best. We also lowered taxes to compete in the marketplace. That’s the proof in the pudding, and it’s all documented.’’

For students planning a career in the field of politics, Manchin gave them a word of advice.

‘‘You have to love it, and you have to have thick skin,’’ he said. ‘‘I have the best job in the country being governor. There’s only 50 of us, and it’s the most elite club in America. I wake up every day with enthusiasm to make your day better. I’ve been like that for four years, and I am asking to be re-elected to serve four more.’’

During a question and answer session, one student compared downtown Wheeling to the core of a rotten apple.

He asked the governor what will happen to the downtown as places such as The Highlands continue to grow. Manchin replied that Wheeling is going through a renaissance and will be transformed into a technical city.

‘‘It will be more of a business hub if you will,’’ Manchin said. ‘‘I really see it coming along. You already have Orrick, which runs 24 hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year. You have the old Capitol Musical Hall and a waterfront. ... Will you have a shopping hub? No. You will have high-tech jobs.’’

Manchin later met with campus officials and students in the college’s Alumni Wall of Honor Room. There he spoke about higher education and answered questions concerning more assistance and funding from the state.

Regarding higher education costs, Manchin said it should not be the state’s responsibility to foot the bill for college, but rather the student’s duty to pay the cost. Manchin also said the state has made progress in raising educators’ wages.

‘‘Primary and secondary education is mandated. We will make sure it’s accessible and free – all of that’s done,’’ he said. ‘‘Do we put more money into higher education? I don’t think it’s the state’s responsibility to pay for higher education. That’s pretty sobering. We will be you best partner, just not your sole provider.’’

WLSC President Robin Capehart and Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer John McCullough thanked Manchin for his time on campus.

‘‘It’s always a thrill to have a governor visit,’’ McCullough said. ‘‘Especially Gov. Joe Manchin.’’

Mylan needs to offer Garrison a nice job now.He fits in there. Dr. Nellis needs to return to WVU and restore order and credibility. He is the ideal candidate having previously been WVU Provost and Dean of Eberly. This episode would not have happened if he had been selected WVU President; as should have been.

atoddh, what is your point? I said it's all about politics, not democraps. Problem is in WV they are mostly one-in-the-same. BOG are MOJO'S peeps, they will do what the dictator tells them to do. Your boy MOJO has the whole state under his control. Just do us all a favor and keep voting for him!

Lets face it if the Govenors daughter got a degree without earning it how many more has done the same its worth looking into and being one of the good old boys sure shows bright and shining untill they catch you with your pants down. Its dirty anyway you look at it.

nemisis: The BOG probably should hear from the public on this issue. My point(to WV4) was that they are certainly not all Democrats. The time is soon approaching when the damage to WVU and our State will override the need to keep Garrison around.

I was very pleased that the NR conducted the poll and has chosen to run the AP article. They are doing the right thing.

I do not think the Governor was involved in this. It is more likely Mr.Puskar, Ms.Bresch and Garrison plus certain BOG members that are tied to Puskar. Garrison was likely expected to do favors for those who gave him his job and made 20 million dollar donations to WVU - and more on the way. After all what is one fake MBA in exchange for 20 million + and a cushy University President job. No one would ever know.

The script might read something like this:

MP:"I gave you 20 million,now I want a G.D. MBA for my COO - make it happen, Mike!"....MG: "Yes Sir,you know I always deliver - I am a Company man. It's don

Gee, wonder when the powers that be will turn off the comments? Truth has to hurt them. On a side note, sell the Pirates!

WV4: The BOG has the power to remove Garrison. They selected him. The policy commision which oversees the BOG is headed by a Republican. The owners of the NR are serious Republicans as well.

It's all about the POLITICS! When these world wide papers make the headline "West Virginia Politics as usual." is all I need to say! If we put those in office out in May and Novemeber then the headline would read "West Virginia voters are tired of the politics!" Good luck!

wv4:I think the NR is comming around on this issue. One of the principals of the paper is on the BOG and I do not think they want their venerable family name attached to anything like this. They have been here since the State & University were formed.

How did Manchin explain to these students how to get free credits to graduate? I had to work my butt off for eight years to get enough credits for my master's and Ph.D from Ohio University. West Virginia University is a great school, but this situation with Manchin's daughter is going to ruin the school. Everyone who was aware of this situation (including the president) must be fired immediately and her degree revoked. The Board of Governor's has acted too slowly in this situation. It hurts everyone who has earned a degree in the State of West Virginia. West Liberty should have been outraged that he even showed up at their school.

Maybe Governor Manchin could do something of SUBSTANCE for the Northern Panhandle rather than just visiting his cronies at West Liberty.

He's a sleezebag just like his uncle A. James. In spite of his shameful antics recently I see he still has the penchant for finding the camera.

He sure isn't your "average Joe".

Your "average Joe" can't arrange a masters degree to be given to their daughter from a major university without her actually earning it.

And if anyone believes that he had nothing to do with this, they need to put down that kool-aid.

Did Gov Joe inform the students on how to grease the right people so your child can receive an MBA w/o earning it?
