CHARLESTON — Tournament time is when many players step up and make a name for themselves. West Virginia, St. Marys High School would like to introduce you to Kelsea Fickiesen. In her first game in the West Virginia Class A Girls’ State Tournament, Fickiesen lived up to all the hype with a loaded box score in leading No. 2 St. Marys past Wheeling Central, 51-37, in a quarterfinal showdown Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center. ‘‘I saw that some of the girls were nervous (on the ride to Charleston) and I knew I couldn’t play nervous,’’ Fickiesen said. ‘‘I wanted to show everybody that we belong here.’’ The talented junior scored 29 points (13 of 19) and grabbed 12 rebounds, while adding four assists and four steals. And that doesn’t include the numerous passes she disrupted by playing aggressive defense on and off the ball. ‘‘What’s there to say? I’m speechless,’’ St. Marys coach Howard Meeks II said. ‘‘Sometimes I argue with her because she wants to get everyone involved all the time and I want quicker. That’s what makes her special. ‘‘I don’t know what everybody else says, but I don’t think that is the No. 4 player in the state. Nothing against the other girls, but she can’t help that the uniform says ‘St. Marys.’ ’’ After Cassie Sorge drained a 3-pointer on the first shot of the game to give Wheeling Central the lead, St. Marys erupted for an 11-0 run with layups from Fickiesen and inside points from Sara O’Neal.
