McMECHEN — Ryan Jones missed Bishop Donahue’s fifth defensive series against Cameron last Friday night. He deserved a breather. After all, he had already caught three touchdown passes for 123 yards and returned a punt 50 yards in giving the Bishops an early 33-0 lead in their season opener. ‘‘We were trying to get some other players in there and give him a break,’’ Bishop Donahue coach John Durdines said with a laugh. But Jones wasn’t done. A few moments later he caught another touchdown pass, this one from 63 yards out. His night was finished. He had done his part. The grand total? Jones caught four passes for four touchdowns and 186 yards. He also returned three punts for an average of about 29 yards, including the score. Not bad for a guy who didn’t stepped on a football until his freshman year. Durdines remembers what he saw when a young, lanky Jones first stepped onto Union Field in 2007. ‘‘You could see he had raw talent,’’ the coach said. ‘‘He was blessed with having (fellow receivers) L.A. Hampton and Michael Matheny as teammates and especially a Michael Angalich to throw to him. ‘‘He was getting plenty of reps as a freshman.’ Like the team he was playing on, Jones showed lots of potential. But results hadn’t been kind to the Bishop Donahue program prior to Jones’ arrival. The team had suffered from a numbers problem and that, in turn, didn’t result into enough victories on the field.
