Students Receive Food, Fellowship
Fried chicken, green beans and homemade bread may sound like a Sunday feast at home, but for several students residing on campus at West Liberty State College this summer meals like these are what’s for dinner throughout the week. Each summer the college’s version of a cafeteria — The Market Place — is closed as the majority of students pack up their belongings and head home. However, there are students who stay at WLSC throughout the summer fulfilling work commitments and summer courses. In an effort to help these students, school officials have teamed up with members of the community and church groups to offer healthy meals and snacks at a special location. Dubbed the “West Liberty Summer House,” a faculty home – used by the women’s softball team during the regular school year – has been transformed into the central meeting place for food and fun. “We are using this house in the summertime as a resource for these kids to come and have a meal at no cost,” said Jason Koegler, WLSC development officer. “The development office decided to offer this to students when they saw a need. This is President Robin Capehart’s first full summer here. He started last summer in June. He saw a need and wanted to make sure he provided this service to students this summer.” Since the West Liberty Summer House opened its doors, several local restaurants and churches immediately wanted to help by providing meals. Other donors have offered ingredients that make the meals possible.
