Movie Short Takes

‘Mirrors’ Is An Image of Horror

August 23, 2008

Normally films about the supernatural don’t have much effect on me. In fact, many people consider “The Exorcist” the most frightening film ever made, but I thought it was incredibly funny. Linda Blair’s head doing a complete rotation as she spat pea soup at priests didn’t frighten me at all. Every so often, however, a movie comes along that I find disturbing enough that I spend some time thinking about it after I leave the theater. The last time this happened was six years ago when I watched “The Ring.” Although the film received mixed reviews, it was just weird enough to give me a case of the creeps for a time. I had somewhat the same reaction last weekend when I saw “Mirrors” starring Kiefer Sutherland, Paula Patton, and Amy Smart. Actually the film is a remake of “Into the Mirror,” a Korean movie that came out in 2003, and although I realize that what goes on in the film is completely impossible, there was something about it that made me uneasy. Sutherland plays Ben Carson, a former member of the New York Police Department who has fallen on hard times. He was suspended from the force a year ago for accidentally killing an undercover police officer, and he attempted to cope with his troubles by turning to alcohol. But all this did was alienate him from his wife, Amy (Patton), and now she really doesn’t want him around their two young children.
