Hundred Ready to Contend

November 25, 2009

HUNDRED — In his third season at the helm of the Hundred boys’ basketball team, Justin Balwanz is chomping at the bit to get the 2009-10 campaign started. After all, Balwanz is welcoming back four starters and six letterwinners from a team that finished 13-12 and lost in the regional to Wheeling Central. ‘‘This is a group of kids that have been at the desired level mentally for a while, but they are more physically mature now, and I think they are ready to handle teams like Wheeling Central,’’ Balwanz said. ‘‘I know that is a big statement, but we are looking forward to the opportunity to find out. ‘‘There is still a lot of work to do, but the expectations for this season are there and we just have to live up to them.’’ While 6-foot-3 pivot Corey Kimble and his 17 points per game average has graduated, there’s still a trio of double-figure scorers in the mix. Leading the way is 6-3 senior forward Emery Smith who dropped in 14 a game last season. He will be joined in the starting five by 6-1 classmate Zach Phillips at center (7 ppg.) and 5-9 point guard Logan McDiffitt (11 ppg.). The other returning starter is junior guard Dalton Kuhn, who averaged right at 10 points a contest. The fifth and final starter will come down to juniors Tyrell Watson (6-2) and Shane Kuhn (6-0), who both averaged three points last season. Other returning lettermen include junior guard Chris Shackelford and sophomore forwards Brady Koontz and Mitch Moore.
