Gator Bowl Matchup Worthy of Attention

December 25, 2009

When West Virginia won its last two games to finish in a tie for second place in the Big East and Notre Dame wrapped up the Charlie Weis Era in a freefall, Konica Minolta Gator Bowl officials worked to obtain the second-tier matchup of a lifetime, pitting legendary head coach Bobby Bowden against a school he used to coach in his grand finale. Sold out in fewer than two days, counting expanded seating, it’s a bowl game that is drawing a lot of eyes and “eers” for two teams with nine combined losses. Tuesday’s Eagle Bank Bowl, in which one of the participants is Temple, also features teams with that many losses, is barely registering a blip on the college football radar. Sure Gator officials had to step on a few toes to do it — the Gator is supposed to take the No. 3 team from the Atlantic Coast Conference and five teams had better conference records than the Seminoles — but they’re in the last year in their loophole-filled agreement with the ACC and the Big East, and thus it didn’t matter whose feelings they hurt on the way out the door. Hey Clemson, 6-2 in the ACC, have fun Sunday in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl against 7-5 Kentucky. First of all, Bowden says his team is nowhere near as bad as its 6-6 record suggests. ‘‘If you could take one play of about four games — don’t let them have this play or give us this play — we’d be 10-2,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s not like people wore us out. Now Florida wore us out. But you have to win the close games.
