Bruney Wants to Start Strong
The top priority for the Brooke football team this week, besides garnering a victory, is to score first. The 11-0 Bruins have done that just once this season. Saturday’s opponent in the West Virginia Class AAA quarterfinals at Brooke Memorial Stadium — Ripley – is 9-0 when it has scored first. “One of the things we have put down as our No. 1 goal this week is to score first,” first-year Bruins coach Tom Bruney said. “Basically what I told the kids is when we get into the blocks and the gun goes off we have to run a 100-meter dash. “We have to get ourselves started on the right foot. I told the kids they need to quit being so generous. They have to quit being so nice to people who come to our house to play.” The No. 9 Vikings come into the game off a 21-14 victory against No. 8 Nicholas County. That victory was the fourth postseason triumph in school history. A victory against Brooke would give Ripley (9-2) 10 victories in a season for the third time in school history. The Vikings and Bruins have met three times. Brooke won all three and ended the Vikings’ postseason each time (1986, 1987 and 1989). Ripley was unbeaten during the regular season in 1989 before meeting the Bruins. “They are a pretty good football team,” Bruney said of the Vikings. “They are predominantly a running team and come at you with several different formations. “I know a lot of coaches talk about balance on offense. Ripley’s balance is handing the ball to several different back.
