Big East
Depending on what you’re reading or who you’re listening to, as many as four teams have the capability of winning the Big East this season. Of those teams — Pitt, West Virginia, Rutgers, and defending champion Cincinnati — none appeared in the AP or the Coach’s preseason polls, which seems somewhat silly because there’s little doubt at least one, if not two or three, will be in both polls in the end. For the record, here’s the breakdown on the projected league winners: Big East media poll — Pittsburgh Rivals.com/Yahoo! Sports — West Virginia Athlon — Cincinnati Lindy’s —West Virginia Phil Steele — Rutgers Sporting News — Pittsburgh So what does that mean? Well, nothing. We all saw how much the preseason polls meant last season, both inside the league and nationally. West Virginia was picked to win the conference and began the season ranked No. 8 nationally. The Mountaineers wound up tied for second in the league and finished at No. 23 nationally, only because they were able to eke out a one-point victory in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Cincinnati, voted to finish fifth by the media last preseason, emerged as the conference champion and wound up 17th nationally, despite a loss in the Orange Bowl. The Bearcats’ lone league loss was to Connecticut (by more than three touchdowns). UConn was a lot closer to the bottom of the preseason projections than the top. It’s an inexact science.
