A jam-packed, three-day weekend of activities continued Sunday with fireworks in the night sky of Oglebay Park at the conclusion of the Wheeling Symphony Under the Stars concert. Special guest artist Los Angeles jazz trumpeter Chris Tedesco performed with the symphony under the direction of Maestro Andre Raphel Smith. Also concluding was the 31st annual Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild Show at the Pine Room of the park. Spokesman Joe Hodorowski of Bellaire said the show went “very well.” He estimated 600 people passed through the show Saturday and a large number attended Sunday as well. “We had a lot of town exhibitors this year,’ he said. “Some came from as far as New York and Virginia. I’m very pleased with how it went.” Along the riverfront, the fifth annual Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta drew larger crowds than ever and an excellent field of 46 racing boats, according to Debbie Joseph, co-founder with her husband, Dan, of the event. Expanded again this year, the regatta has become a three-day activity on the waterfront in Wheeling, with entertainment Friday and Saturday nights as well as raceboat events at the Heritage Port Saturday and Sunday. Joseph said two days of good weather helped drawn large crowds. She praised the hundreds of volunteers who work to plan and operate the regatta each year. Sponsors “made everything possible,” she added. Of special note at this year’s regatta was the addition of WesBanco as the event’s naming sponsor.
