Russia Was Justified
Editor, News-Register: In 1983 the United States launched an invasion of Grenada. Protection of about 200 American students in a school was used as a large poart of the justification. The Americans had not, to my knowlege, been harmed. A few days ago, Georgian forces launched an attack against a breakaway province, South Ossesia, that is 75 percent Russia, whose citizens hold mostly Russian passports, and which was occupied by Russian “peacekeepers.” In this attack, hundreds of civilians were summarily executed. Refugees speak of households of women lined up and shot by Georgian firing squads. Children were being run over deliberately by Georgian tanks. Old people were being burned alive in their homes by Georgian troops. What did we expect Russia to do after this, even if Ossesians did provoke some type of response? With 1,600 of their countrymen slaughtered? It reminds we we were supporting KLA in the first breakup of Yugoslavia when the KLA was driving Serbs out of Muslim villages, and supporting Chechnyan groups that were killing Russian school children in their schools. Our elected officials need to quit treating Russia as an enemy every time it takes care of its borders, and woo Russia as an ally. I worry about our soul as a nation, I worry about us “teasing a bear.” Medvedev is Russia’s president. “Medved” means “bear” in Russian. He will not back down from the slaughter of so many Russians.

We West Virginians live in a period of an unexplainable moral contradiction to which apparently we give little or no attention and one which, if we have any compassion or civility at all, we should denounce and insist that it cease immediately.
