Pirates Trump Reds
By PAUL LADEWSKI For The Intelligencer PITTSBURGH — In the midst of another offensive slumber, this one for five games, the Pittsburgh Pirates needed something to light a fire under them Tuesday night. Suffice it to say, this wasn’t what they had in mind. In the second inning, Cincinnati Reds starter Mike Leake drilled Andrew McCutchen on the back of the neck with a running fastball, and his Pirates teammates immediately responded with four runs to finish a six-run rally. The six runs were one more than they had scored in the five consecutive losses. Starter Paul Maholm and the bullpen held on for a 7-6 victory at PNC Park. The start of the game was held up for 1 hour, 25 minutes because of rain. For several minutes, McCutchen lay motionless on his back before he was helped off the field. X-rays were negative and he was diagnosed to have a contusion on his neck. His statusias day-to-day. ‘‘He’s all right,’’ reported Lastings Milledge, his clubhouse neighbor. ‘‘He’s just a little bit sore, that’s all. We’ll see how he feels (today).’’ ‘‘I think the ball got away from (Leake),’’ manager John Russell said. ‘‘You never want to see a ball up around the head. You know, it’s a scary thing. I was concerned about Andrew at that point, but a ball in that area is scary.’’ Fifteen days earlier, McCutchen sprained his right shoulder on a catch in right-center field. He sat out six games as a result.
