Local Summer Resident Campers Program Under Way
Now that school’s out and summer is in full swing, many parents are met with the age-old summer complaint: “I’m bored! There’s nothing to do!” There are, of course, some easy solutions: summer camps, swimming pools, a good set of ear plugs ... But for those families with a tighter budget, providing the little extra to send a child to camp isn’t a “quick fix.” However, this summer marks the 39th year of Wheeling’s House of the Carpenter’s Resident Campers Program. Students from low-income families, as well as those with disabilities and behavioral problems and foster children, are eligible to attend one of the five week-long camps held at the Valley Grove Kiwanis Fresh Air Farms, owned by the Wheeling Kiwanis Club. According to the Rev. Jack Lipphardt, associate director, the Resident Camp has two main goals — to provide personal love and attention for every child, and to ensure each camper receives three meals and a snack every day. Campers will participate in a variety of activities including Bible-based classes every day, crafts, indoor and outdoor games, and specialized evening activities. Certain nights will be dedicated to swimming, softball or a carnival night. The camp began as a day camp but evolved into a resident camp in the 1970s and currently aids 150-160 students every summer. “This is one of the key programs the House of the Carpenter offers over the year,” Lipphardt said. June 23 kicks off the first of the camps with 7- to 8-year-olds.
