Tennant Defeats DeLong
CHARLESTON — Natalie Tennant won the Democratic nomination Tuesday for West Virginia Secretary of State, easily outpacing Hancock County native Joe DeLong and Wyoming County resident Billy Wayne Bailey.
Tennant made good on her second attempt to win her party’s nod for secretary of state. The former West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot, broadcaster and 2004 candidate won with 51 percent while West Virginia House of Delegates Majority Leader DeLong, D-Hancock, had 36 percent and state Senate Majority Whip Bailey, D-Wyoming, had 13 percent.
DeLong fared strong in most local counties, easily outpacing Tennant, the Marion County native. Wetzel County, however, ended fairly close, with DeLong capturing 1,820 votes to Tennant’s 1,787 votes.
Tennant will now face Republican Charles Minimah in November.
